Amp problems
Amp problems
I got a alpine 4 channel amp (mrp-f300) and so far just alpine type s 6x9 speakers. I got all the wires ran and it was working but sounded kinda staticy/distorted and then i decided to see how much bass there was and started to turn up the bass boost on my avh-p4100dvd head unit. Got it up to about 4/6 and all of a sudden they speakers sounded like they blew out and theres insane ammount of distortion even at low volume.
I dont really see how the speakers possibly could of blown out when the amp only puts out 50w per channel and each speaker is rms 85 and max of 250. I have it grounded to the bolt behind where the backseat locks into/ back seat release. I feel like its a ground issue but im not sure. I have a mulitmeter but not to sure on how to use it for grounding.

sounds like you blew them up. 6x9's don't really like that much bass, and turning up the Bass is not the right way to make them sound good. You probably had your gain on the amp set wrong too.
If they didn't sound good to start with, why turn up the bass?
I'd suggest having a friend help you that knows what they are doing, or paying a shop to do it so you don't blow another pair of speakers. If you don't want to do that, there are a bunch of threads here about how to properly set up a amp.

they sounded good i just turned up the bass boost because i wanted to see how they sounded. They sounded great and didnt sound like they were strugleing at all and there was no distortion they just stopped and i turned off the radio.
When i get home im going to wire them back to the head unit and see if they still sound blown
turns out there blown because my old pioneers work when amped.
Anyone have any idea how speakers rated for up to 85rms 280max blew from 50rms?

its all in the settings man. power ratings aren't necessarily set in stone... what i mean by that is you can set anything to be either bullet proof or blow up. In your case you probably "blew" the speakers by giving them too much bass. a door speaker only has so much excursion and anything after that is voice coil blowing power.
How a speaker works is excursion = cooling. A bigger speaker normally has more excursion then a smaller one. also lower frequencies need more excursion to be played. So if your 6X9 is playign 20hz it may mechanically "max" at 20w rms. then that extra 30w rms doesn't make the speaker move more and cool it self properly and will just blow the speaker. Yet at 1khz the speaker doesn't move nearly as much so mechanically it would take say 100w rms to blow the speaker
im very surprised the pioneers "work" when amped. the TS series pioneer speakers are IMO 10X worse then the stock pioneers in the cobalts
