Lightbulb Base Coupe, need a sub box that'll house two 12's and fit in the dinky trunk opening.

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone here went with a pre-fab sub box? Suggestions on maybe a different type of box?

Reason I'm asking is that I have two 12's in a sealed MTX box and the damn thing is like gargantuan. It wouldn't fit in any way into the itty-bitty trunk opening. Subs are Rockford Fosgate HE-2 with a 1.25 cubic feet per sub recommendation. I was also wondering, would having only 1 sub hit just as hard?

If these are stupid questions, forgive me, I'm not the big music head.

as long as your sub box does not exceed 1 foot 1/4 inch it will slide in there with some manuveering.

I know of 10" subs that will hit even harder. Bigger is not better. Look for something more efficient. One Kicker L7 in a box no bigger than 1 cubic foot would hit hard (provided you have the right power to drive it).

ok, so maybe going with a different sub would be better? I have a Kenwood Excelon 810-d amp that's rated at 1600watts and is 1-ohm stable.

And I can also maybe fit that box through the folded down seats? I looked and it doesn't seem any bigger, but i'll give it a try.

Going the new sub route may seem intriguing though because I don't really wanna eat up trunk space since the battery and spare is in there.

You could even put the Kicker sub off to the side in a custom enclosure and still have lots of trunk space left over. Keep in mind the Kicker sub is a dual voice coil sub so it acts like two subs in one. You will need a CLASS D amp rated at a min. 350 watts RMS to run this sub. Kicker makes amps specifically for this sub and they sound awesome!!!

Cool! I'll look into it.

But the Kenwood amp wouldn't power the sub? It would really suck having to re-purchase sub, amp, and box. I don't think I could recoup nearly what I paid for those items to put down on that stuff. Hmmm.......what to do.

I had the exact same dilemma as you. I had the box, amp and sub. The guys at Concepts on Wheels in Toronto recommended I try out the Kicker sub (which I have between the two front seats in my Caravan now). However, he used my existing box and just modified the cutout to fit a square enclosure (the L7's are square subs BTW). My Kenwood amp was suffucient to run the sub but it wasn't tight at all since this amp is not intended to run a DVC sub. Once I upgraded to the CLASS D amp (a Pioneer) I was like "where the hell did this thumping come from"? Words cannot describe what a difference there is when you get the right set up going. Sure it costs you a little in the short-term, but this sub and amp combo will pound for many years to come. I hope you decide to upgrade; it's well worth it. For weeks you will be saying to yourself: "I can't beleive my car could sound like that"!! Good luck...keep us posted.

my 12" L7 was in a custom 2.5 cu ft box in my last car, and it hit 145.5dB with 600w going to it (rms is 750w)
the box was 1/4 inch too big to fit in my cobalt
i stripped the interior, but it still wouldnt even fit in

i ended up buying a 1.75 cu ft box, and it doesnt sound even close

Well, My amp is a class "D" so that wouldn't be a problem.

I checked around for some prices and as an example, Crutchfield wants like $350 for one 12" L7.....I think mine were like $150 apiece. So you guys are saying just one would do? Like 1 10" or 1 12"? I would think the box would be still just as big with the 12".

At least I have options......I am getting my head unit put in tomorrow and will keep an open mind from there.

Well, finally found a box that somewhat fits. It's an MTX Sledgehammer single 12 enclosure. I've run MTX before and they sound decent. Mated up with an MTX amp. Should be decent. Thanx for the replies.

What were gonna do with my car is fold down the back seats and just slide it into the trunk. Cause the front of the trunk is a bitch. so freakin small.

Same problem

I have the same problem... I got 2 12" RF Punch in a ported box, with a 1600 watt amp from a friend who workz at a local car audio shop. The box wouldnt fit into my car. so I have to buy a smaller box, or 2 seperate boxes for the RF 12's. The speakers I have in there right now are no name (lol, for a short time only, it came from my first car), there 2 - 12 inch 1200 watts total peak in a custom sealed box (made by me) anyways it looks small in the trunk of my balt, but in order for me to get it in there, I had to fold down the rear sets, and push it in with all my might. (it ripped some of the covering off the box).

I have been waiting for someone to take out the spare tire and glass a sub on the floor but I have yet to see it. I am considering it myself but I think I'm just going to build a huge box out of MDF to fill the entire trunk.

I can probably get my MTX Wedge box in there. It is angled on both sides... so probably could get it in there with some grunt work
