Directed 689M
I have been working on a aftermarket key-less entry/alarm/remote start. i was unaware at the time of purchasing my remote start that there were manual specific.... so I installed most of the alarm already and i don't want to redo it. so i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Directed 689M? its supposed to make sure that the car cant be started with it in gear. any help is greatly appreciated.

I haven't used the 689 myself, but I just pulled up the manual on directechs and checked it out. The 689 is really only needed for the DEI alarms that don't have manual mode option. The module itself can't tell if your car is in neutral or not. What it does is mandates that you remote start the car (almost like the pitstop procedure) and it detects that all of the doors are closed and stay closed until the next remote start.
Ensuring that the car is remote started before you exit shows that the car obviously must be in neutral as it will be running when you exit it. Then it shuts down when you close the door(s). If a door is opened, intruded, or the car is disarmed, the remote start will not be enabled.
So it's more of a safety procedure more than, "is the car in neutral".
