Exclamation Emp Dual Alternator pics

thought i would finally upload some pics... so here it is the first dual alt cobalt. The alt is currently out of the car thou because i decided to get a chrome pulley instead of the gold pulley... im also waiting on getting a gm stage 2 performance package to get a smaller supercharger pulley to get the belt to fit.

Took a few pics of the finished work. Due to not being able to find the correct sized belt we had to add 2 idler pulleys to take up some slack.... Unfortunately that left only 2 options on routing of the belt around those pulleys. Going under the first pulley would have allowed more belt area on the AC but the belt would end up hitting the metal support... Going under the first pulley ultimately reduced the belt coverage on the AC even more but cleared everything up top. We tested the AC running and there really isn't any slippage. Mind you this is still "freshly finished" so the next few weeks will be keeping it slow and popping the hood often. And with that hopefully ill be lucky and be issue free for a long time.

More power, not to the wheels though!

Good if you have a system running lots of amps and other power loving equipment.

lol i knew bring this up again would cause all kinds of controversy.... I added a second alt for more power to the car audio system. I have a 3000 watt rms subwoofer amp and the stock electrical wont handle it that well so i decided to go extreme and go with a dual alt setup. Yes i am aware of the performance loss and i honestly don't care. The alt itself is only a max 5hp loss on the drivetrain and since i must get gm stage 2 to fit the belt I'm still going to be ahead of stock. My main performance loss is the actual audio gear because my car is going to gain a lot of extra weight.

i have yet to see a reputable company make a bigger alt for our car and with the lnf i dont see it happening. Plus a dual alt system is a million times better then just getting a bigger alt

1 horse power = 746watts not counting friction of mechanical parts.

Power ain't free!

I understand the point behind the dual alt, and wish you would post a how to, but also understand wanting to be unique....selfishness (kidding). I have been looking for a upgrade for my alt but I see now why I have yet to find one, it just aint out there.
Question- Could you possible tell me the amp output of the stock alt in a SS/SC and one more, will upgrading my batt. make a difference, say a yellow top (not running two, just replacing the current one)

That looks really easy to make, I think you just took that piece, heated it up, bent it, and welded that other side on. Am I right?

Wish I still had a welder...

For wiring You would just run it parallel with the other stock alternator.

basiclly yes. It is in theory quite easy. most of the time was spent on the piece that looks like a streched U and rounding everything off to make it look nice. But the main problem is getting everything to line up... the shark fin piece had to clear the alt fan, part of the stock support had to be cut to allow space for the new alt, the stock engine mount bolts had to be grinded on one side to hold that bracket correctly ect ect. And we havent even had a belt on it yet.

Im not running parallel with the stock alt because its a externally regulated ohio gen. So i will be able to change the voltage as nessicary.... Its going to be hooked up to 2 kinetik HC16v batts (currently mounted in the wheel well)

stock alt is 105 amp.... and upgrading to a better battery would definitly help. I would recommend a carquest NGT extreme if your on a budget (equivilant to the yellow top but cheaper... i run one for my stock electrical) or a kintik if you can afford it

aww u changed from guru to emp... lol

um actually not for some reason the optima yellows tend to not last all that long. the car audio shop i work at is actually contracted to have a yellow and red top for sale at all times but we dont sell them for that reason. someone wants a battery we or i recommend the carquest NGT extreme.

on the stock electrical with just that battery and bigger ground wire (2/0) i did 3 runs at a comp (1 spl burp for 10 secs max and 2 30 sec streetbeat runs) the voltage never went below 11.9 and that was at the very end of the very last run but it was mainly at 12.4 and this was running a T30001bd with a 3688 watt birthsheet

Thank you, I was going to buy a yellow top, but now... I'll have to start the search. (Good car audio equipment is hard to find around these parts) In any case thanks for the info

Does your 2nd Alt have to be set up to run backwards, or does it work the same either way?

yes 2 ought... fosgate 2/0 is going to be used to the sub amp and ground 2nd alt power wire and all the battery connections. I just might have enough left for a run to replace the stock battery wire but if not im going to use the fosgate 1/0

i asked ohio gen about that before placing the order and they said the alt can be run either way as long as its spinning

I had 3 alt. on my astro van lol and one of them was a generator from an ambulance 300amp. Be glad to see the finished set up. I guess SBN in daytona is to far from you i would say i see ya there.
