Interesting, I will try a usb stick out. I am running the iPod. Shouldnt make a difference I would imagine. Maybe it's not usb 2.0? One thing I do love is the bluetooth. Being able to answer my cell by hitting a button on the steering wheel is golden. Never thought I would need bluetooth... but I love it.

Anyhow, I will try out a usb stick this aft and see what happens.

Thats really cool that they did that in the new cobalts. Now if they would just move on to heated leather seats....

I bought an aftermarket HU w/ bluetooth and USB. The way mine works is you just need to have MP3's on it, and it will play them. I use an 8GB stick, and it has no problems. If its just a USB jack, I highly doubt its for IPOD's only. An external HD usually requires power from outside of the USB port, so that could be your problem, try a USB thumb drive.

The owners manual does not mention Zune as being supported... memory sticks with MP3s and WMAs will work it says. And an 80GB iPOD is much different than a 80GB external hard-drive. The iPOD is "sending" the music to the radio, where with an external hard-drive, the radio has to "pull" the music from the device.

I think I follow ... An iPod has an 80gig HD, and music gets extracted, routed, and played much the same way. I think what you are saying is that the Ipod has its own Music player to sort and cache 80gigs of songs while the external HD does not, thus leaving this duty to the cobalt display. It must have something to do with the amout of songs the cobalt stereo can cache and display.

When using a memory stick, do the songs show up in the display on the radio screen?

I am looking at getting this option but I'm a Zune guy and if it doesn't support Zune or show the songs from the memory stick then I'm thinking about not getting the upgraded USB deck since I could still just use the aux input for the Zune.

Besides the USB is there anything else different on the optional deck, like a bigger amp or different speakers?

ReckleSS- On the 2009 there is an optional deck that has both the Aux input you are referring to and also a USB post
