installing Infinitys...URGENT!!
Hey guys.
Well I went over to Circuit City today and got my Infinitys out of my Cadillac. I tossed them into my trunk of the Cobalt now. I'm going to wire them tomorrow hopefully. I had to slide them in through my back seat becasue of that damn tiny opening.
lol. My set up is this: 2 Infinity 10" subs, 1 Pioneer 800 watt mono-amp, and a universal sealed felt box. Everything is already wired to the amp becasue it was done before. I also bought a new wiring kit (for up to 1000 watts) and the converter for the back of my headunit.
So basically what I need to know is this:
- How do I disconnect the OEM Pioneer sub from the amp? I'm leaving the amp in there for the speakers. I pretty much know how to remove the sub, but how do I disconnect it?
- How do I remove the OEM headunit? I'm obviously gonna need to remove it to replace the wires wit hthe converter. Is that whole converter situation plug and play?
- Since the battery is in the trunk, I just connect everything up to that...right? Will I need to get the usual GM post adapter thingy?
- Will I need a capacitor? I needed one when they were in my Cadillac becasue it was pushing the Pioneer 200 watt player, all 4 aftermarket speakers, and my sub combo described above. My lights were dimming bad. I don't want the Cobalt to lose any more power than it has to...
I'm sure there's more...but that's good enough for my thoughts now. lol. I plan on doing this tomorrow...so if you have ANY info...PLEASE POST!!!

Yeah. I had them in my Cadillac and they were great. They sounded amazing inside the car...and you absolutely couldn't hear a damn thing outside of the car. I'm gonna try to wire them tomorrow morning (today)...so I'll snap a few pics.

okay. I dont have a cobalt so ill help from what i have read and already know.
1) Unhook the speaker leads from factory amp that go to the sub.
2)Im asuming you are keeping the factory stereo and just splicing in a lineout converter for rca's? If this is right then you will need to splice the lineout converter into the stereos rear speaker leads. To remove the radio just carefully pull off the trim piece and behind you will find a few screws that hold the stereo in place.
3) No need for a post adapter.
4) Im not even going to go any further then to say that capacitors are just bandaids for a weak electrical system.

clmbngfrk18, I never said I was going to replace my headunit. I said I needed to know how to remove it so I can hook up the wires into the back. anyone know how to do this? It's the only part that I DON'T know...
And yes, my problem with the Cadillac was probably the fact that the eletrical system power was from 1989. Enough said. lol.
So to remove the OEM sub, all I have to do is just disconnect the wire from the amp? lol. Are there just like 4 screws on the sub housing, then it just pulls away?

im not 100% shure but i dont think u even need to remove the head unit u can splice in a line down converter to the speaker wires going in to the stock sub and it equealizes the power output that is driven by the stock amp and makes it safe for rca splicing (the power levels going in the amp) and the great thing is that the battery is right there in the back then the only line u need to run is for the remote turn on wire .... u prob dont need the amp wiring kit just go to a good stero shop and ask to buy a couple of feet and u can get some decent small gauge wire anywhere so it might end up saving you 20 bucks!!! im not an expert but i think thats what i would do
pleas let me know if anything doesnt make sense or if i am wrong i havent tried this yet but i plan to some day and would like to know how right i am but at least this might lead u in a better and easier direction

Well about the splice thing... I think that wire set up can only accomodate low wattage. I'm not sure. I'd rather be safe, then have something blow up.
*shrugs*
I'm going downstairs now to try to see what I can do. I'll be sure to snap some pics and perhaps throw together a how-to.

to remove the headunit, pull off all three of the silver trim peices off your dash. you can just tug on them to get them out, no screws. once you get the trim around the radio off, you'll see four (7mm?) screws that you'll have to remove. i believe the headunit should just slide out after that.
If u have the 7 speaker check this post its got lots of info on that system https://www.cobaltss.net/forums//showthread.php?t=1939
one of the guys at our meet yesterday had an existing set up is his and he told me exactly what he did his username is vettecamaro13 maybe u can send him a message and he can tell u i am fairly confident you will not need to remove the head unit

Well...after a few friends joining me on my quest for some delicious bass...we got it done. I'm actually running the OEM Pioneer 8 AND my 2 Infinity 10's. It's definately sweet. I'll post up a picture or two tomorrow.
okay here are my thoughts, first of all I attend Installer Institute in Daytona Beach Flordia for car electronics, so I know about stereos but haven't tinkered with my '06's system yet. About the capacitor the rule of thmb is that a cap will actually hurt a system (sound quality wise) if not used in the right settings. A cap is meant for someone who listens to alot of rock and country music (i.e. bass that doesn't hold, just has short fast beats). If you listen to alot of hip hop I would skip the cap. It released short blasts of power and the beginning of the beat will pound and the end will not be as loud. Hope that helps, secound make sure that your total power being pulled, Ii.e. amps isn't more thatn what your alternator puts out or your better save for a new one down the road. The thing you could do is by a high output alternator or get someone to build you one since an '06 doesn't have alot of parts yet. A fellow 2006 SS black auto

Nice to see a fellow black SS.

Actually...I've noticed that I don't need a capacitor. My power supply on my Cadillac must've just been horrid. I'm not losing any lighting at all...with 3 subs!

I've got an entire infinity speaker system with tweets and all and a JBL sub with an 800 watt gothic amp from my old Z24 but I find that this base system is not too bad for now so I'll go with the original maybe until next summer.

when I was buying my stereo for my Cadillac...I didn't really care for how the aftermarket Pioneer speakers sounded. But I figured I should opt for the Pioneer option anyway. I wanted the tweeters and stuff. I'll probably change it around later...but for now with the door tweeters and the 3 subs...it's a pretty good set up. lol.
