Locked Radio
So I did a quick search and came up with very little about a locked radio. Anyway here's what's going on. I have an 07 LS. I bought a radio from an SS/TC it plugs in fine and and should work, but its locked. I know I can probably go to the dealer to get it unlocked, but what I know is; is there anyway I can unock this thing by myself? If so, how?
Also I just called the Stealership and they want $96 to unlock this thing. Much thanks to anyone that can save me some cash.

Pretty sure you have to take it to the dealer.
The new HU's are programmed with the VIN that they came in, and that needs to be
overwritten in order for it to work with your car with the TECH2.
Sucks when you buy a replacement, but at least you don't have to have it unlocked every time you disconnect the battery.

I have the same problem but bought a radio from another 06 s/c into my 06 s/c. like guy above me said it has to be programed with the new VIN of the car...however if this happens in the future they can do it for free if the radio is programed to the VIN already. in the end stealership wins
!!!! I gota save up money and unlock mine also so your not alone!! lol
Once the VIN is programmed, you can remove the radio and
reinstall it without having to have it reprogrammed.
I just did it with mine when I test fit the LCD bezel.
I think that it's a better system, but I still can't see the
point of security systems like this on stock HU's. I mean, seriously.
Stereo thieves usually know enough not to bother with the factory
stuff. Usually it's more work to get it to work in a different car than it's worth
(dash fitment, outputs, antenna connections, etc)
The theftlock systems usually just end up pissing off the
owners.

If they are asking for the old VIN, it's not because they need it to unlock the radio.
They may have it as a policy so that they can have it on hand in case the police come
asking later about a rash of stolen radios, knowing they need to be unlocked.
If they have the persons name on the RO, along with the VIN # for the vehicle it came from, it
would make their job that much easier.
Plus, the dealership doesn't want to invite suspiscion that they are unlocking stolen radios.
Same reason that you need a copy of your registration to get a new key cut from the VIN.

i just had the same problem...gotta black head unit out of an 05 ss and mines an 06 ss...they want 88 to unlock it...**** my life..and the guy said he wasnt sure if it would even work...sure it work for sure from an 05 to an 06??
not saying your retarded , just did an install yesterday for a cobalt , he wanted a factory radio put in that he got from the wrecking yard and it had no prompt for a code , so he had to go to the wrecking yard get the vin and go get it reset, all that just to change the color, why not just swap the face! ....NERDS....but mine was totally different.
This radio theftlock "feature" is the stupidest thing ever. Think about it; the criminal isn't going to find out the radio is locked until after he steals it. Do you think hes going to bring it back after he finds out? No! of course not!. The only thing it serves is to make money when situations like this arise and the dealership can now get another 100 bucks out of you to re flash it.
