^what he said. you're looking at about $250-$300 for a decent upgrade including wiring, the amp, sub, and building a box (or getting a prefab one). The install should be extremely easy for you....all the wires you need to tap into are in the trunk, so is the power source (your battery).

There's a how to on replacing the stock sub with a better one, but imo, you're better off removing the stock sub all together and putting in a decent aftermarket one in a new box with amp. I'm running a 10" alpine type r shallow mount powered by an alpine amp (i forget which one right now) and it sounds awesome.

2 15"s in this car.. haha.
by the way OP, im doing an upgraded sound system soon, small 10" shallow sub and amp.
i had 2 12"s, but didnt want the extra weight, and a good brand 10" should work fine.
but my question to anyone who can help is, would it be easier to put the new 10" in our little stock box, or remove it and get a small shallow sub box???
I spent a little under 1000 on my system and it sounds awesome from down low to blowing my ear drums out
that was for speakers all around, head unit, 2 12's, 1000watt amp

My buddy is a nerd. I had him tune it for me. its the perfect ratio of music to BOOM! i have it low i hear words real nice with almost no pounding in the backround. turn it medium its still nicely balanced. crank it, speakers scream, and my mirror falls off within a few mins

If you want a dead simple solution which I personally think sounds awesome but doesn't shake the car apart....
Amazon.com: Infinity Basslink 200-Watt, Dual 10" Powered Subwoofer System (Black): Car Electronics
I purchased this unit and I run on the far side of my trunk (opposite the stock sub).

ha ha, im just kidding 15s are too much, tuning is hard with them, cant hit higher notes, need super loud speakers to hear music, need a really expensive amp to power them.

i like 12's because they are right in the middle.
10's are awesome with the higher notes, unless you have 3+ then they are absolutely amazing
12's, personal favorite, are right in the middle mine hit pretty domn low and pretty damn high lol
15's are all low, i like the be able to hear the bass tone change with the songs

the wiring portion of subs is SUPER easy. watch someone you know do it once and youll be able to install just about anything lol
but as far as what amp u should get, your basic 500 watt amp from best buy would be fine since your just looking to get a little bum and nothing to serious.

just post up what ur going to get before you get it if ur unsure
not always. in most cases yes when comparing a single model of speaker but even going from one to another in the same brand you can get a 15 that's more accurate then a 12 ect
