question about making a ported box

im thinking about trying to make a ported box but was wondering about the design, my question is when you make the port, do you have to have the wooden things inside the box that are coming off the port. like this..

or can you just have a port with nothing connected?

and where can i buy MDF?

yes a ported box must be tuned. how wide/tall/long the port is is going to determine alot about the box. Theres a reason prefab ported boxes sound like garbage. sealed cant really be fucked up

I can't see the pic but have you seen a sealed box .. If you take off the connectors on the back the bass sounds like crap or less bass . So if your thinking of making a ported box make sure you do it the right way and either copy another design or know what your doing cause the sound will be different depending on how the box comes out

Actually depending on the car is on the box you get I believe that like our cars that are sealed trunks we get a sealed box and if its open like a van suv and so forth you get a ported box if im wrong sorry this is what I heard

nah it depends on wht the mfg reccomends for the sub, although my ported box is probably the reason my trunk lid rattles so much, that dosnt happen to any of my friends with sealed

that is the port. a port isnt just a hole in the box its the whole "area" so that wall is part of the port. The easiest way to build a ported box is with areo ports. slot ports like the pic u showed are more difficult

rattling has to do with frequency and volume. my box is sealed and ask the el paso guys what i can rattle

The Digital Designs web site give idiot proof instructions on how to make a box. Even tells you how to do it with the least amount of cuts possible
http://www.ddaudio.com/dd/default.asp

If your trunk lid rattles then put some sound dead. material on it. My subs do face up at the trunk lid and it does not rattle at all. My deck lid is another story but I would rather not talk about it right now...it gets the better of my temper

haha yea at one point i pushed my subs up against the back of the trunk and pointed them upwards, it makes the car (not trunk lid) vibirate more IMO but i didnt hear a sound difference, im about to check out that DD site though

From: peoria Il,
If you guys need speaker boxes built or even need a cut sheet created for you please contact me. Subwoofers absolutly need the right airspace and tuning frequency to produce the proper sound. If you dont do this and just make any old box especialy with no port wall your going to blow your subs. I'v been in business for 7 years and i have a full facility to make any type of box your looking for PM me or email me if you have any questions

well peoria is about 150 miles from me (STL) so if it was cheap enough and you had some credentials then i might be interested in buying one then driving up there...how much would you charge for a dual 10 ported, 1.3 per chamber?
