Question about Sealed and ported setups
Question about Sealed and ported setups
I use to have a sealed 12 sub but i decided just to see what it would sound like ported and they both deff have there pros and cons, sealed is awesome for my rap and ported is great for everything else,
would it be bad to have two subs one ported and one sealed in a trunk?

if you have a sealed box and you say its good for rap, then get a ported box. you'll love it. ported=rap. nice and boomy but not muddy as long as the box it made right. if you do listen to techno, rock etc. stick with the sealed. either way, if you go ported, which i suggest, then have a box made. please do not cut holes in your present box and "port" it.

Wow this is weird, all this time ive had a SEALED box and my rap was awesome but everything else just sounded weird, so i decided to unscrew the cover on the top of my box to port it and now my rock and classical music sounds great, but my rap dosent have that thump anymore
I think your sealed box was not the right size then. If it sounds good ported, then it might have been too large. Check the specks on your 12" and then check how much air room your box has.
If your going to mix and match ported and sealed subs, get them in different sizes and run them off of different amps with different cutoff zones. Such as < 60hz to the ported 12", >60hz to the sealed 8 or 10".

Who cares what Crutchfield says, check the CF yours subs require and compare it to the CF of the box. Something doesn't match up if they sound better ported then sealed.

If you started with a sealed box from Crutchfield and just stuck a port in it,
then it's going to be tuned way to high. So it will be cutting off the lower frequencies (rap).
Ported boxes need more air volume then sealed boxes. Here's a link to the site I used
when I made my boxes all through highschool and college.

So when you put the port in the sealed box, it would be the same thing as
decreasing Vb (box volume) in the formula, which would raise the tuning frequency.
Hope this makes sense

did you just put a hole in it?

No im not stupid, it came with a port, just needed to unscew the covers
I just figured out the problem in my headunit the sub was out of phase, switched the phase so that the sub is pointing down in the picture and wala bamm Sound is thumpin again....
PORTED FTW

it's more about the signal source than anything else, granted you can't have horribly shotty sub drivers and amps. In almost all cases, I would go sealed tfor the best quality sound, ported boxes will give you one hot frequency and can tend to sound monotone. You can still make sealed subs slam, but you need the right amplification and the right size enclosure to avoid muddy response. small boxes are tighter in general for overall sound, but can't usually produce the deeper notes and louder volumes because of the smaller amount of forgiveness in the air pressure differential of the box. Small box = Less air inside the box = less effeciency of the sub (because it's working with set amount of space) a medium sized box and sealed subs and you should be slamming for any kind of music you want, should you configure it correctly. I've built a lot of systems and through my experience, the Alpine "Bass Engine" (fancy name for their signal processing) is the best you can really get for built-in processing. Time correction is the biggest key to success as far as quality sound in the car. Crossovers have become more dynamic recently as well, but as long as you have the right eq control on your signal source, you can avoid "hot spots" in the low frequencies.
Ported or Sealed can also depend on the speaker it self. Some speakers are better sealed than ported. In most cases though, if done right, ported will beat harder. It also depends on the size of your box. Each speaker has a "perfect" ammount of air space required. Sealed boxes require less air space. Ported boxes are bigger. If the port"s" isnt located in the right spot"s", they will make the speaker sound like ass. I've built alot of speaker boxes. Best thing to do is look up your speaker's specs and requirements and go from there.
Oh and never do one ported and one not ported, or two differnt speakers. Yes there are freak cases where it sounds good. For the most part though, never do it.

Bandpass FTW!
I've had all types of boxes.. and bandpass by far was the best. it gave me the boomy bass for rap, with the tight bass for everything else..
just don't go with bandpass in a convertible's backseat.. then it's FTL..

You do realize that two different size subs in two different boxes that are on different amps and have different cut off ranges will provide a more robust sound with less area of reduced response don't you?
