A question about TheftLock and upgrading to the OEM MP3 unit

I am in the process of making a few decisions about the radio unit in my Cobat LS. It is the base radio (without MP3 capabilites).

One of my options is to find the upgrade radio (the one with MP3 capability) from another Cobalt owner (someone who has put in an aftermarket unit). However, I am wondering if swapping to the upgraded OEM head unit is possible with TheftLock. Are these units specific to the car's VIN number? Can they be changed from one car to another? I know that I was given a code for my stock head unit that needs to be used after the car's battery is disconnected. I'm hoping soemone here who has "been there done that" can help me out.

Thanks

if you put in a different deck (different OEM) i believe you may have to take it to the dealer to get the new deck programed into the cars computer......

i don't know why u have a code for ur factory radio... it's programmed with a vin so when it loses power it still contains the vin so no code is needed when the power comes back on.. i hope that makes sense.

There is a clear label that was attached to all of our radio's from the factory. This label has some numbers and a bar code on it. I'm sure this has something to do with the Theftlock system. During dealer prep, these labels are taken off the radio and (should be) put with the owners manual/documentation package that is in the glove box of our cars.

What is the code on this label for?

All I can tell you is that the deck learns a portion of your VIN # and retains this even after power has been cut to the deck so placing it in another car isn't going to be a direct swap but I'm sure if you purchased it through GM they'll have some way around that.
