I don't know if I coulda searched this, but if I get an aftermarket headunit, will my steeringwheel controls be rendered useless? Or do some h/u work, and some dont?

I know stereo installers can program it to work if you get a radio that does not work with it

Yes, you can get it to work. As mentioned above, you will need a translator box and a head unit that can accept commands from it.

This site will give you the info you need: http://pac-audio.com/default.asp

I use the PAC SWI-ALP (which is now updated to the SWI-JACK) with my Alpine receiver.
