I highly doubt it is shorting, I would say the part itself will go bad before the wires. I will call you, definitely!

Really? Was it exactly what I described?

yes sounded quiet, and almost sounded like she had no sub at all. But it would do it intermitently as well. Its not hard to swap try your buddies for a test then pick one up. I would say junkyard dealer will charge out the ass. Hers was warrantied

Exactly, I can't even hear the sub. (Granted my bass selector is in the middle, I can usually hear the sub easily.)

Definitely intermittently also.

From all I've read it is a BITCH to get out?

I'm having the exact same thing happen, except only with the front speakers, specifically the front drivers side. And I have the base speakers (LT, as low as you can go) and the HU is stock. I'm thinking bad speaker?

Didn't really read through the thread but its not the speakers, they would be rattling if they were blown. It can't be the external amplifier since the highs/mids are quieter, not just the bass. I HIGHLY doubt it's a bad connection as that would probably onle affect one speaker and there would be sound distortion. If it only occurs when listening to the radio then it MIGHT be reception issues but that should cause distortion too, did you just get your windows tinted? I highly doubt it has anything to do with reception. So it must be the H/U. I would just take it into a shop or replace the headunit. I don't know any details about the stock headunit, if it is internally MOSFET amplified, it sounds like something with the MOSFET got messed up and it's sending un-amplified/partially amplified signals to the speakers.

The easy stuff you probably already checked: If your using AUX, make sure your mp3 player's volume is all the way up and check the balance/fade on the headunit. It sounds like something that is not fixable from your position, it sounds like something internally with the headunit.

what year do you have? I have a Radio from a 06 SS/SC if you end up needing a new one.

It sounds like a Head unit problem, unless the stock amp is dying. I know the Stock headunit for the Premium Pioneers puts out a low power signal, usually sent to the amp, maybe if the amps dead you just get the low signal from the stock headunit sent through the amp without it being "amped" up, and it goes out to the speakers then?

(I have a stock amp too if you need it)

2006 SS/SC I've narrowed it down to the HU or the factory amp. Not sure which. Most electrical failures like that are just bad luck, you really can't prevent either of those from breaking.

How much would you like for each/both? How long were they in the car?

The amp was in the car for about 6 months, the headunit about 2 years. I'd like to get $50 for both? They both were working fine when removed, and have just been sitting in a box since. My Headunit was equipped for XM, Onstar, and MP3. It's silver and hasn't lost any of the labels on it.

Before I'd pick up new stuff, I would wiggle some wires at the amp and headunit and see if you get anything though, maybe you just have to troubleshoot a bad wire (Amp turn on wire?) and you'll be ok... Are you running aftermarket subs and amp?

i would try the amp first then the HU. its a bitch to get to the amp but if thats the problem then it will save you the money to pay the dealer to reprogram the HU. IMHO its probably not wiring but really 50/50 on if its the hu or the amp
