Removing XM Unit?

I tried the search, but "XM" is too short to search for...

I'm installing an aftermarket system to replace my factory Pioneer setup, but my head unit only has Sirius hookup. So would it be alright just to take the XM unit out of my SS/SC? Or does that little box on the rear deck do more than just XM?

TIA!
