Set up questions
Hey folks,
I'm a total noob when it comes to sound systems. I've been content with the stock 4 speakers that came with my Cobalt in 2005, and now I have finally decided to make an upgrade with what I can do.
Option 1: Amp+sub setup in the trunk, which would probably be the best bet sound wise, EXCEPT, I drive back and forth between NJ and FL for school every spring and fall and every single inch of my car is used up. I chucked out so much stuff last year due to lack of space, and really can't take up anymore space.
Option 2: Swapping out the four stock speakers for four good speakers that will also produce a decent amount of bass. I don't know how possible that is sound quality/performance wise-- but in my moms Murano, the stock speakers (no sub or anything from the factory) kick more bass than my balt ever has, same goes for my dads Explorer. I get a massage in those cars, especially the Murano, compared to the Cobalt.
I'm leaving my options open, and my budget I would like to keep under $400 if possible... I'm not looking for the best of the best, but I want good sound with a bass hit thats way better than what the stockers provide. I'm not looking to be heard 2 blocks away, just a nice, good kick from inside. Option 2 would be optimum for me, but as I said, my options are open.
So any input from you audiophiles would be awesome
Thanks guys,
Cirrus

option 1 ... but do what i did... have a distribution block on the power and ground so you can allen key it all right out... or
even better just undo the two wires that go into the sub box from the amp and take the sub box out when you need space? im guessing that you dont travel to and from school alot .. every spring just take the box out
you could kick around in the classifieds section and somebody is always selling ther stock pioneer sub box from the SS model cobalt.. go get a 150 watt rms amp and read the how to on how do hook it up and youll be satisfied.. for the time being

I'll go checkout Crutchfield too, I've seen that recommended plenty of times here...
Another Q, concerning the plastic(?) covering over the stock speakers on the door panel, do others generally remove that or keep it on? Would keeping it on distort quality much?
EDIT: Looking at component speakers on amazon, I ran across this: http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Refer...1054264&sr=1-1
Is that just one speaker, or is it a pair? I see some say pairs, but I don't see anything about this being a pair in the description... And If I went with this, these two would go in the front speakers, and then get a good pair of speakers (not component?) for the rear? Or would it be better to have component speakers all around?
EDIT 2: I was reading online that some component speakers need an amp or else they will get distorted above medium volume-- whats the deal behind this?

The infinity system on the link is both left and right. I also would say look at crutchfield just to see what fits your car you can find alot better prices other places. I have never heard of the plastic distorting the sound, so I would say keep it on. Im not 100% sure about an amp for a component system, I would say you could find a system that isnt so power demanding and you would be fine.

I would think it would sound good. The basslink is a self amped 10 right? Where you planning on all infinity then?
I always wondered what the basslink sounded like

Correct about the basslink. I've only read one bad thing about it on CSS.net but several great reviews, and tons of other good reviews online... Not sure if I'm sticking all Infinity, doesn't really matter to me. Whatever sounds good-- I'm going to go to Best Buy first though to check out the sound that comes out of some potential speakers...

Basslink is treating me awesome! It cuts out sometimes when the volume is turned way up and the bass is way up (I'm talking near max or max volume and bass), I'm guessing it's a power supply issue, but other than that it's been flawless.

why not just get a 12' sub in a small sealed box and mount the amp on the back seat, altho if your trunk is full on your long trips, the sub would be worthless because there would be a bunch of stuff infront of it. why not just get some subs and take them out on your trips? if you dont want to do that then yea id get some nice componet speakers, then when u have the extra $$$, spend 200-300 and get a 4 channel amp for the 4 speakers which will make a huge difference.
edit: didnt notice how old the thread was
