ok, this might be quite a stupid question, but is it possible to hook an amp and subs up to the stock stero in an 2005 chevy cobalt ls?

yea it possible, you just need to get a high low.. that connects to the speackers in the trunk and use that as the rc wires for the amp.. i think you can buy them for like 15 bucks at best buy or ciruct city .. or w/e

You need an amplifier with Line Level Input.

The remote line will hook into the fuse box. find a fuse that turns on and off with the car. maybe a sunroof fuse, audio or cigg. plug. yes get a line out put converter..just simply hook it onto the back speakers. any other questions?

you don't HAVE to get an amp with line level input, you can just get a line output converter like illmatic said.

and amp with a high level input is the best idea, as the converters distort the sound sometimes......

Ok, Noone is holding a Gun to your head, but a converter is the worse of both bad solutions.

Now, will there need to be a limit on the output of the subs, or will it be the same now as an aftermarket stereo?

A limit like what do you mean? If you are running and aftermarket amp then the limit will be those of the subs..... you wont have a lot of control over sound however with the factory equalizer.....

well, the bass will be louder, as you can adjust the gain on the amp, depending on the amp it may have a cross over on it so you can pick where you want the bass to be. mine is set around 50-60hz. You just wont be able to control the bass itself, if you run the connectors off the rear speakers, say if you adjust your balance or fade, the subs will be affected, since they are running off those channels. You understand what I mean? I mean it will sound better than stock for sure, you just wont have tuning options so to speak, and i agree with brian.... the rca connecter deals are garbage, in the past i had nothing but problems with them. Get an amp with high level and low level inputs, thatway if you do upgrade your headunit in the future, all you have to do is run 1 more wire

also, depending on where you are in new york, if you get all the materials, i can do the install for you for half of what a stereo shop will charge. I have a business on the side, the site will be up soon hopefully, www.Endlessautomotiveinstallations.com, should be ready to go in a week or so.... html is a new world for me...lol

I had the rca connector wired into my rear speakers on my Ion and I was able to adjust the sub output through the deck. However it would adjust the bass levels on all speakers not just the subs alone. It will still work just fine though, but of course without the fine tuning of an aftermarket deck but good enough. Just use the control on the amp and call it a day.

if i were to put an aftermarket deck into it, would the install look good, im afraid that it is going to look like crap, if some one have a pic of a professionally installed deck can u put one on... i wanna make sure there not going to leave me a big like.. hole in the dash, or make the deck hang out a good like 2 or 3 inches like they did at bestbuy for my friends cavi, and ive seen them installed wiht like a space under the deck for cds or small stuff like that

nah. the cobalt dash kits look sick. i did my friends ss/sc and we painted it silver so it would look and flow nicely. I would just get a new deck. You of course would need the dash kit, wire harness, and antenna adapter. Which you would have to get online or have a best buy order for you. Then you would of the sub control thru the deck and have more power to the speakers/factory amp. If you have the steering wheel controls you will lose them. You can have them to your deck. Some companies make interfaces that might work or you can get patch cables and hook the controls to the deck. Check it out, go to a local best buy and check it out.
