thoughts on the stock sub enclosure and upgradinbg the sub
ive decided after more than a year that my stereo from my old car wont be going into my cobalt. it consisted of a JBL 601.1 monoblock powering 2 JBL power series 12" dvc subs, a JBL 75.4 running power series 6.5 components and 6x9, all run from a pioneer 850mp deck. ive decided ive outgrown driving around pounding gangster rap as loud as i can, and im now more into rock so a stereo like that is a waste.
now im thinking of using some of the stuff but downsizing. i already have my pioneer deck in the car. i do plan on using the components and 6x9 aswell. the big change is i am thinking of upgrading the sub and using a 5 channel amp. my plan is to use an alpine PDX5 amp and a Kaption shallow mount sub.
first thing, how is the stock enclosure??? im concerned with it flexing and was considering putting a layer of fiberglass in it to stiffen it up. i have a friend that works in car/home audio and is wanting to try a new product out, its a spray on coating that claims itll give 3db gain from any sub box, so i may try that stuff out. has anyone tried doing anything with the stock box??? and offhand does anyone know the volume of it???
as for the amp, its small and quite powerful for a 5 channel, i was quite impressed when i heard it. im not sure on were to mount it yet, id like to keep it hidden out of the way. i dont think there is room with the spare tire, im thinking mabey behind the carpet on the passenger side in the trunk.
one more question, and thats to do with the chimes. im not sure if i have a chime module with my deck harness. i know the chimes are run through the front left speaker at the amp, and i know ill lose the chimes if i disconnect the stock amp. if i was to leave the stock amp in and have a tweater under the dash hooked to it, would the chimes still work or does it need input from the deck still???
