Mute is for Phone and illumination is un needed. Just put some tape or heatshrink on the end of the wires and tie them off somewhere out of the way.

You should be able to tap the wire that's all the way on the left side of the dash to the left of the steering wheel that's on the light dial... not sure which wire though.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work
Got that from the HU's owners manual, you might want to read it over!!

Also got this from the owners manual

Yellow/black
If you use an equipment with Mute function, wire this
lead to the Audio Mute lead on that equipment. If not,
keep the Audio Mute lead free of any connections.
Just a bit of advice, its generally a good idea to read the install instructions before you install it, it saves alot of headache

you dont need to hook up the illumination wire because all that does is dim the lights in the deck when you dim the dash lights in the car.......it has nothing to do with the deck actually "lighting up".

oh god just leave the ill wire off. all it does is dim the HU lights at night (when your headlights parkign lights or whatever is enabled) the cobalt doesnt come with one on the regular harness and imo its not worth the hassle finding the wire and or splicing something that shouldnt be spliced

Thank You, thats what I was trying to say to start with.

BTW-I don't own the HU, and I still managed to get my hands on the manual, only took about 3 mins. If you go to the pioneer web site you can download both the user manual and the install manual.
Since I'm such a nice guy I'll even give you the link

u dont. dimmer and illumination are very close to the same thing most vehicles have one or the other and it just matters how the HU interprets the signal. Either way it would do the same effect and dim the hu at night. cap it off

i really dont know. if i knew i would have told u by now... y dont u hook it up first and find out urself if u think its too bright. also alot of the better HU's have a dimming feature in the menu that can be enabled manually.

The ill. wire only makes it so the dimmer kicks in automaticly when the headlights turn on. You can also turn it off and on manually, just like Emp said. I know this for sure cuz I looked it up in the damn manual as you should yourself, then you wouldn't have to ask.
Besides, I don't do this for a living but Emp does, so if he is telling you not to bother with it, then its good advice, use it.

Ok well if your that persistant. The easiest dimmer wire I can think of to get to would be the one that runs to your boost guage but I am not sure of the color. If you really wanted to run it right to the headlights then on the headlight harness its the brown wire, but I don't suggest doing that, unless you are really headstrong about doing it. Seems like a lot of work for nothing

I agree with Spun on this one. I just turn the brightness down on my radio if it's too dark at night.

Id like a good spot to hook the ill wore up also, I know everyone is saying its useless but it would be nice to use this feature of my h/u. I have a z2 and the screen is BRIGHT at night and to go from all the way bright to all the way dim manually takes too long. Also the maps have a completely different color to them at night which would be nice to use.

But in an effort to actually help you, i think its possible to just run a switch to the ill wore thats hooked up to a 12 volt source. I havent had time to try this out for myself but im gunna sometime next week, so ill come back and let you know how it goes. That way at night you can just hit the switch, which for me would be a lot faster than holding down the display button until the menu shows up and pressing the brightness button until its dim enough.
