so 9k miles with oil changes every 3k and bone stock is owners fault.

they do need a good tune though, the stock tune is ******* garbage, as you can tell whenever you drive one and it falls on its face 1000RPM before redline.

Well seeing as engine failure that early is actually rather uncommon I'd say it might. Especially if they didn't check oil regularly. But I don't know the exact conditions the car was driven under.

​​​​​​Well yes and no on the falling on its face. Part of that is the earlier model WRX's with a TD04 that turbo becomes a hairdryer above 4500 so it's rather useless. The vf52 on my '14 does better and doesn't fall as hard and holds out till 5500ish.

Now can we get back to OPs question? Is it not possible that the end tanks separate on these intercoolers and cause a boost leak?

The OP asked the question 5 months ago, and boost leak (including intercooler) was already brought up. There's really no use speculating what may or may not have been the actual failure unless he wants to update the thread.
