Modified K04?

I haven't seen much information on here about guys modifying the factory turbo on our cars themselves. This seems to be pretty common in other car communities such as dsm, and subaru forums. You see a lot of different venders offering k04+, and such for turbo options. What I haven't seen much of is guys taking their turbos to a machine shop to be honed out, and putting in a bigger compressor wheel themselves. Can anyone give me an explanation why diy turbo mods are not as popular on lnf cobalts as they are on other platforms? I maybe missing something to, but have not had much success finding information on the subject.
