Exclamation Premium Fuel?

I was thinking of turbocharging my 06 cobalt, 2.4L. I'm probably only gonna be running 8 psi on a stock engine. Recently, I was talking with my friend about it and the topic came up that i would have be running premium fuel, 91 octane. I was wondering if there is anyway I can get around this without causing knock and destroying my engine. I don't want to use octane boosters. Obviously it has to with the ignition; can I upgrade somehow? I've known about these new spark plugs that have recently come out (pulstar.com) and was wondering if i could apply them to the problem. Thanks for any input!

I believe he is correct. ^^^

But just an FYI, our manuals (at least mine in the 07 SS 2.4L) recommends (not requires) us to use (I believe) at least 91 octane. Not sure what you currently run in yours but I have ran 93 octane since I bought mine.

I knew someone was going to say that right off, but stop and think about it. Just humor me and take a look at this article (http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...emiumgas_x.htm). I know a few people that use regular in stock turbo charged cars and haven't had any problems. The only reason there is knock is because of improper detonation and if you have a better more reliable and consistent ignition source there should be no issue. Check out those plugs in the previous post too; you might be surprised.

Yeah really.

I always run premium in my 2.4SS.......and it doesn't even have boost. The owners manual calls for 91+ due to the compression ratio on the LE5's.

I only run 94 octane from Chevron
If your not ready to cough up some serious $$$ for fuel don't go turbo.
My car uses 19.2 Litres/100 Km or 12.2 MPG under heavy boost

After hearing what you all have been saying I definitely will use premium; I'm not that much of a cheap ass. As to Reign SS, I never disregarded 06blackg85ss advice, I just wanted more input. The more opinions presented the better. Everyone has had different experiences and possess different knowledge. I was just curious, at this point, if you could avoid having to use premium. It seems there is no definitive way around it, but it doesn't seem like an extremely challenging obstacle to overcome. Thanks for the info and feel free to keep posting.

If Your willing to invest $3,000+ on a turbo kit and not want to use good fuel, just doesn't make sense. But just do the right thing and spend the money.
