Turbo in 9 months

I am gonna be getting a turbo this summer hopefully if the funds work out like i think they will. i would like to get the injen short/cai intake for my car since i would love the extra power right now. also the system i hope im gonna be able to get is the turbo kit that garrett is gonna be putting out soon and with that kit i read that it retains the stock airbox which means i would be able to keep my injen cai with the turbo kit. i dont know if thats how it will be setup for sure yet but do you think i should spend the $250 on the intake and chance being able to use it with the turbo kit? or just wait until it comes out to make sure i can use it?

I say wait, save your money. Once you get the turbo kit, then go from there!

definately wait. when you get the turbo kit, there are plenty of other mods you wil want/need to do to get the performance you need. I am not sure how the kit is set up, but it would suck to have spent $250 on an intake you may no longer be able to use. Plus, I'd honestly be worried about other things than the cai if you're getting a turbo kit. Things such as tools to monitor air/fuel, boost, fuel press, oil press, also issues of getting in more fuel and spark with the more air the turbo will push out. just make sure you know what you're doing if you're going to spend the big bucks.

i plan on getting 3 gauges- egt, boost, and oil pressure. i hope a 3 gauge pod comes out pretty soon i saw some talk of one a month ago but not sure how its coming along. i def wont want to use the stock air box with a nice turbo kit but if i can enjoy some extra performance now ans still utilize the cai with the kit thats what i would wan to do, i am planning on getting a 2.5 inch catback exhaust in feb. so that will give me some extra kick too until turbo .

im in ur same position, i want a CAI but as soon as a f/i kit comes out im gettin it, so it would kinda suck to buy an intake and have to get rid of it after the upgrade. so i decided to wait and spend the intake money for other stuff

this is the kit i hope to get...

Garrett Turbochargers

Judging by Ron Lummus' six-win performance in the Turbo by Garrett Pontiac Sunfire Hot Rod drag car, Garrett might be just a wee bit familiar with the GM Ecotec engine. Though it might not make your 2005 Cobalt LS coupe and LS sedan dip into the 7s on the drag strip, Garrett's new turbo kit for the 2.2-liter Ecotec will push horsepower figures past the 200 barrier. Garrett rep Ainsley Hyman was exceptionally anxious to show us the new bolt-on kit built around Garrett's dual ball-bearing GT2860RS "Disco Potato" hair dryer designed to spool quickly without sacrificing flow up top. Along with the turbo, Garret includes a front-mount intercooler, plumbing, manifold, blowoff valve, piggyback and everything else necessary to make the bolt-in unit work. It even retains the stock catalytic converter and airbox and is schedule to be released in early '06.

Nice, but will that work on the 2.4L VVT? It only mentioned the 2.2L.

these engines are almost the same with very samll differences, 2.0,2.2, and 2.4 so if its made for the 2.2 then i will make it work for the 2.4

GOOD NEWS

I talked with Kyle at honeywell/garrett technologys and they are working on the 2.2 car right now and he said the 2.2 and 2.4 arnt much different so it should work ok. He verified with me that the stock airbox will 100% be used with the kit and getting the intake should be fine to be used with the turbo so i will be enjoying a CAI before i enjoy my turbo. I just figured I would let you all know.

exactly how would you retain a cold air intake or stock air box with a turbo kit. The intake piping would be coming from the turbo with the kit so the routing would not be the same.

Well it should be about the same as the super but i wouldnt get the supercharger from gm cause it is not intercooled or even aftercooled. The Garrett turbo can crank more psi with the intercooler and the "disco potato" turbo that is going on that kit is sick as hell and has almost no turbo lag. Imagine pulling up next to your neighbors srt4 and smoking the **** out of him in a cobalt ls.

You can make a custom charge pipe to route to where the original pipe WOULD/SHOULD be and then use a CAI kit and mount it like as if the unit was right where it should be.

superchargers are cool but if you want big power from a 4 cyl engine turbo is the only way, if you are happy with moderate power then a supercharger may work for you but the sound of a turbo is much nicer to hear than a whine imo
