Cobalt XFE Selling Faster Than Planned

July 23, 2008: Cobalt XFE Selling Faster Than Planned
Nancy Libby, a spokeswoman for Chevrolet, says that demand for the car surprised the automaker, as it had estimated that the XFE would make up just two to three percent of Cobalt sales. In actuality, the XFE model accounts for eight percent of sales and sits on the lot for just eighteen days on average -- lowest of any Cobalt model. Perhaps the best news of all is that other automakers are observing the success Chevy has had with the XFE, and the concept is spreading across from GM to both Ford and Chrysler.

Funny, seeing how the XFE was a marketing tool to begin with.

here comes a market even more flooded with 2.2's

I wonder what the tweaks and gearing do to the power.

Or a nanny mode in auto trannys. Thats the selling point of the L99 in the new Camaro. And has been on trucks for some time. Have you ever tried to floor it in an Avalanche? For all the noise it makes, it goes nowhere!

We will see.

My 08 LS isn't a "XFE".

thats why you need to bite the cost of gas and get the LS3 its not a camaro if it has a nanny along for the ride.

Actually, I've been pretty pissed off at GM for a while now for only putting the XFE effort into their damn trucks and SUVs. **** the people that can already afford a damn SUV, why do they need to save money??? I bought a supercharged 4 vs. a V-8 for a reason, and if I only had a damn FlexFuel badge on the back of it, instead of the damn escalades and tahoes, I'd be driving to philly to get E85 all the damn time, unlike all the truck/SUV owners that really usually don't give a damn to begin with!!!

E85 drops your mpg down quite a bit. Any savings you see in the advertising is burnt up when you are having to take more frequest stops to refuel. The idea behind XFE is one anybody can do b/c its just a bit of tuning and "low roll resistant" tires. I keep hearing about people in STG 2 with 60 lb. injectors are getting well over 30 mpg like what the XFE advertises. But of course those aren't stock cars anymore.

About the nanny mode, its just as dangerous as it can be useful. My mom had to get a new bumper for the Avalanche b/c of it. Was at a 4-way stop, she saw someone coming that looked like they were slowing down, she went, noticed they weren't stopping, and when she went to floor it out of the intersection, the truck just didn't give her any gas, and ended up getting clipped in the back by the guy that didn't stop.

Its nice to have cars that are economical, but when we put our foot down, it means it needs to move right then and there.

Back then I thought the nanny mode was GM's way of making sure the engine is never abused, and never needed to be warrantied. Didn't think of it as a gas saver until recently. Fortunately, there's no such thing as a nanny in a stick, as was said.

The Cobalt XFE is in both. The nanny mode I'm talking about is on the 23 mpg Camaro SS auto w/ the L99.

Always take a bit more since they use a fluid to spin into a solid, rather than a clutch and a gear. An auto can be made economical b/c its under the computer's control and not the driver's.

Aren't 90%+ of Cobalts sold already 2.2's? And with the 2.4 peacing out for 2009 that number was gonna go up anyway.

Auto are still not as efficient as a manual. Depending on the driver an auto can be the same or better if the person in the manual drives like a douche and vice versa.

I oversimplified my answer. :p Its just with how intrusive computers can be these days, I know it can be done. There are more advanced auto trannys out now compared to what the Cobalt has, but I don't know anything about them so I left them out of my answer.

Every '08 2.2 5-speed is indeed an "XFE". They're just not all badged as such. It's just a marketing tool to note the tweaks to the engine and gearing to get the crazy EPA highway fuel economy numbers.

Mine has wider tires and slightly different tuning. I bought mine in Oct 07. XFE is just a marketing ploy anyway.

I agree.

Cobalt 4 Speed auto is far from advanced. A 2.4L Auto stock is even way slower than the same car with the 2.4 5 speed. I hear that a 2.2L 5-speed can keep up or beat a 2.4L auto because the gearing of the auto tranny is that bad.

Yeah the auto is somewhere in the range of a quarter of a second slower, which puts it in the range of a 2.2L manual.

I hear somewhere that the new SS/TC Cobalt has a new feature that when your at WOT it turns off your AC to prevent power loss under full load like that.........kinda interesting.

That would explain it. I believe the "XFE" started for cars ordered on or after sometime in March.
