A feel-good pill for the Camaro blues.

<img src="http://www.cobaltss.org/pix/candd-article.jpg" align="left" border="0" hspace="5" vspace="2">Car and Driver has another article regarding the Chevy Cobalt SS/SC. The mention something about an upgrade to 230 HP for the SS/SC from GM performance. No mention of a date. They also focus a bit on the Cobalts great hanlding and of course we get compared to the SRT-4 again. Except this time the SRT-4 performance number change.

You can read the article of at the Car and Driver website.

Great write up. I wonder though...how come all these tests in the mags get such incredible numbers vs. what we're reading in these forums about real Cobalt owners. My hunch is that the cars being supplied for the tests are tweaked for optimal performance in some shape or form. I mean, can a driver make that much of a difference? 1/2 second in the 1/4 mile? I can see .30 secs tops, but not .50 secs. The best 1/4 mile time I've read so far is 14.87 @ 95 mph. Then again, I think the public tracks are causing undesireable traction conditions for the Pirelli's because I haven't heard of anyone running the tracks on DR's. Just my .02.

My dealer said to me that the Stage 2 was ready for the Cobalt SS

1500$ (CDN) 205HP -> 300 HP and you don't lose your warranty!

And they are working on the stage 3!

For one thing Car and Driverr corrects and adjustments for altitude and weather conditions (humidity and temp ect)

So the run the car and plug some numbers and they report the corrected times.

For another, I don't think too many people can driver well enough. I see alot of new cars run at the track and so few people can drive it---sad.

I see many timeslips from this site---and the 60ft times are terrible. Its hard to hook up and launch well--once that is mastered you should see the times fall.

Thirdly---a broken in car always does better then a driven off the lot car.

Was it a V6/Z28/SS? I would be amazed if you traded an 02 Camaro SS for an 05 Cobalt SS! Not that Camaros are great every day cars... Mine was great fun, but don't try to go to the store and then put things in the "trunk"! Unless all you buy is 3 small bags.

14.4 @ 100? That's good for a high 13 second pass. Traction is obviously an issue. Some sticker rubber would net a lower et. Awesome. If that trap is indeed accurate, this car is right on track with the SRT-4, which crosses the line at like 13.8 @ 100 or so. Very close race, assuming this info is accurate.

it was just a v6 but it had the 35th anniversery edition SS interior package. all black outside with high gloss coat and all black leather inside with t tops and 5 speed. it was bad ass.... but not as bad ass as my cobalt ss

Did anybody notice the 0-60 time was 5.9 seconds? That's the fatest time I've seen yet for the 0-60 on the Cobalt SS.

How do you figure? A certain mph equals a certain ET? I don't think so---its not that specific but more general then that.

My highest mph in my old 87 IROC was 0.4 tenths slower then my best et.

Yes, it is like that. Let me ask you something, how can an srt-4 cross the 1/4mi @ 13.8 seconds at roughly 100mph, yet the SS/SC does the same 1/4mi at the same speed, but slower time? It's called traction loss. Your trap speed is the best indicator of your cars power when traveling down the 1320. If I trap at 110mph, but run a 14 second et, it means i'm spinning waaaaaaay to much, and I don't know how to launch my car, but it's got all kinds of power to make up for my shitty launch.

Now, if I trap say 101, but have an et of say 13.4, that means I'm probably pulling a 1.7-1.8 60' time, or lower, but can't get my speed up, probably due to the tires i'm using (slicks). It's not always this way, where I have a reletively slow trap (101mph) and a low et (13.4) to match, but it can most definately be the other way around, and it seems like that with the SS/SC. Once people get some seat time @ the track, and learn to launch their cars, you'll see very low 14, to very high 13 second passes with close to 100mph trap speeds. All it takes is practice.

I agree somewhat with what you say. But I say that a certain trap speed has a general range of an et. I do not think that all cars that do 100mph in the 1/4 will have the exact same et--thats what your saying right?

Maybe the engine has great top end power and is acclerating harder at the end of the track. Or conversley, a car has great low end power and is fast off the line but runs out of steam at the end. Every engine has a different power curve.

I have looked at many timeslips posted here and agree--the 60ft time is killing their ETs

I would have to agree the traction at local tracks is not the best. But you gotta figure Car and Driver and Motor Trend do have professional drivers in their cars in their tracks so they should get the best times.

Actually, the Mag guys will have probably the worst times, on average. They test the car for a day. Sure, some of the mag's have good drivers, but they only have these cars for a day or 2 at a time. Not a lot of time to get to know the car's quirks. Owners, with practice under their belt, will be able to beat that time.

And yes, any car that traps 100 mph is good for a high 13 second et, traction depending of course. As I said before, if I'm trapping 100 mph for example and I'm getting a 14.4, that means traction is an issue. We'd have to see the 60' times to know for sure.

I'm an SS/SC owner and I find that the launch is the hardest part. Either the wheels spin or it hops a bit on the launch. The other thing is that in second and hitting the gas, it seems to work up to the point that it's sucking you back in your seat. So, initially, everyone has a head start on you. There seems to be a govourner in every gear so that you can't redline the engine and are forced to shift to the next gear to continue. The speed is there but only half way to the end of each gear.

My question is.........how do you remove this govourner?
