Jamie Holtom and Andy Lally gave the Chevrolet Cobalt its second Sport Touring win during Sunday's Grand-Am Cup 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Lally was running second in the No. 00 Georgian Bay Motorsports Cobalt when the race leader fell back after contact with lapped traffic near the end of the race.
The lead went to the No. 06 Compass 360 Racing BMW Z3 in the early laps, followed by the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i and the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S.
The Compass BMW continued to lead, while the Acura took over the second spot. The first 20 laps of the race were plagued by caution periods. When the third caution started just after an hour of racing, most teams made their routine pit stops.
After the green flag on lap 43 of the 82-lap race, the No. 95 Turner BMW of Don Salama led the No. 00 Georgian Bay Cobalt of Andy Lally. Salama had over a second lead after ten laps of racing.
With 15 laps to go, Lally had closed in on Salama and had was become a challenger for the lead.
With four laps to go, Lally was still trying to find a way around Salama, putting pressure on the BMW driver. Instead of a pass by Lally, though, Salama found trouble in front of him. The lapped No. 20 Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper turned in when Salama did not expect it, and the ensuing contact sent Salama off course.
With the leader in the grass, Lally took over the lead in the No. 00 Cobalt. He was able to keep the lead to give himself and the young Holtom the class win. It was a special win for the team, who had invited employees of the nearly Cobalt factory to watch the race.
"It was all about managing traffic," said Lally of the win. "Don (Salama) got blocked by a slower car and I was able to slip by and get that win. It was great to be able to do that in full view of the 600 plus UAW partners here from the Lordstown, Ohio plant where the Cobalt SS Superchargers are made."
"The torque of the Cobalt engine helped me out of a tight hole when a slower car spun coming out of the esses (early in the race)," said Holtom. "The brakes were good too."
Salama was able to get back on track, taking second for himself and Will Turner in the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i.
Eric Curran and Bob Endicott followed in third in the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S.
