85 octane

Theres a new Sunoco station that just opened up around me and there selling 85 octane for $2.99 a gallon (compared to 87 i use for $4.27). I have a 2.2 so im thinking i might be able to get away with using 85. I always used 87 but do you guys think there is that big a difference between the two? Also if worse comes to worse and i hear some ticking or knocking in the engine b/c of using a low octane, i could just put some 87 or even 89 to even out the gas at 86-87, do you guys know if its alright to mix two different octanes?

85 octane or is it E85? You don't want to put E85 in your car...

Its fine to mix different octanes, but why do they even have 85? I've never even seen it below 87. I'd be skeptical.

It's gotta be E85... if 85 octane was THAT cheap, they'd mix it with 89 and be selling 87 for $3.50 and raking in the money.

89 is just 87 mixed with a lesser amount of 93. Some stations only have 2 tanks and it mixes right in the pump.

And some sell the same gas as 87 and 89. My point was if there was any way they could sell 85 for $2.99 they'd just mix it with a higher octane and make 87 to sell far cheaper than anybody else. I don't think there's any way they're selling anything other than E85 for 2.99 a gallon.

At higher altitudes they sell 85 instead of 87.
