Question Boost Questions for better gas mileage.

Ok Im new to this site and just bought a 06 SS Supercharged. I still dont quite understand how the the boost gauge works. Im trying to get the best gas mileage I can, and Ive read on here to stay around 5 psi or less and you can be really good about it. though I still see the gauge read all the time. So does that mean the Supercharger is always working? I just want to learn how to stay out of boost as much as possible when I want lol

Supercharger spins with engine speed.

BUT there is a bypass valve that controls boost with how much you throttle it.

When you give more throttle theres a plate in the S/C that closes so you can boost.

lol you asked how to increase mileage.. that's how.. if staying out of boost doesn't help then there is something wrong with your car..

my balt gets close to the same mileage my automatic mazda protege 1.6L does with the same sized tank. around 375miles on 12 gallons. if you drive around 60mph on the highway and don't accelerate quickly... dunno what to tell ya.. regardless of it being forced induction or not.. stay off the pedal and it should be enough.. if not get a tuneup?

Stay on the vacuum side of the gauge for max fuel economy. Google vacuum gauge + fuel evonomy. Vacuum gauges have been run for years by hypermilers.

Reading 24 MPG by the DIC? Let's just assume it's right.. That's about as good as it's gonna get with mixed driving in the LSJ. The only time you're gonna see 27+ is 80% highway driving.

What were you driving before for 24mpg to not be considered good by your standards? Sell this car and get a hybrid. I mean.. it is a 6 year old car..

Yes being in the boost hurts mpg. More air (boost) means you need more fuel. If you aren't in the boost its just a tiny engine (and without much power).

Yeah makes sense....but im still trying to wrap my head around the thought that turbos were originally placed in small cars to help fuel economy not for power. So I guess staying out of boost the turbo still works and helps MPGs.

Tiny engine mileage when you want to cruise. More power from the turbo when you need to go. You don't need 150+ hp to cruise down the road at a steady speed.

From my understanding turbos are better because they run of the exhaust..which is energy all ready used by the engine. Where a sc is pullied to the engine which is a bigger load therefore needing more power=more fuel. And as far as what I was driving for the 24 mpgs I literally just bought this car. So they are all previous owners miles. Plus one tire was at 10 psi and 2 others at 20 when they should have been at 40 or so...this guy didnt know how to keep up a car.

yes turbo's are more efficient since they don't take as much HP to make more HP but they still suck just as much gas when you are in boost.

the idea of the turbo is to give a small engine the power of a bigger engine but still maintain it's small engine mileage when the turbo isn't needed to make you go faster as stated above.

see how much fuel you have to put in on your next fillup and compare it to your trip meter and figure it out yourself.. maybe the DIC is off.
