I know you can't get the really great numbers with an auto, but a lot of the tips I see have to do with shifting-- lowest speed in the highest gear without lagging the engine and all. How can I get better fuel economy with my automatic transmission 2LT? I seem to already be getting well above EPA in city driving-- 28.1. Haven't taken him on the highway yet since I need my proof of insurance.

Theres nothing to it really. Just don't accelerate like a rocket ship every time and that alone makes the biggest difference. The auto on the highway at 75 with the cruise and air on gets 34 mpg. Air off at 70 gets 40mpg.

Auto trannys tend to work by themselves based on throttle load. Play with the pedal a bit to find out how much/little throttle it takes to shift up or down.

The other measures, keeping tires inflated, filling up to the first click only, not running the A/C or driving with the windows down whenever possible... those are your better bet. 40 MPG is probably very doable in the auto LS/LT's if you try for it.

 

Step 1. keep revs below 2-2.5k when accelerating

thats all you really need to do, its painful, but it works for almost every car that doesn't have a 3500 stall converter

 

Also, I recommend keeping the tires inflated above 36 psi and make absolutely sure you use the AC as little as possible. One of my tires was really low this morning and I was blowing the AC all the way to work this morning and I was stumped as to why I was only getting 28 mpg hwy.

On the way back I stopped and put air in my tire and turned off the AC and got 44 mpg hwy at 60 mph.

 

easiest and best way to get good mileage in an auto is to no accelerate to a light. in other words, when you know you have to stop, let off the gas as soon as possible and coast. if you're not holding up traffic, coast to the stop sign. and coast to the red light as soon as you see that it's red, or is going to turn red. and accelerate slowly. if you do these 2 things, your mileage will improve significantly. most people stay on the gas and then hit the brake to stop. the goal is to be stopped as little as possile, especially at a red light. remember that if you're stopped, you're getting ZERO mpg.

 

After i got my car tuned, my gas mileage improved and i drive like a maniac. If i drive nice...i get over 38mpg if im driving in town i still get 30 or so...stock i was lucky to get 28 on the hwy. If you drive nice all the time you can easily get in the 30's with an auto...i just chose to have the tune
