I can't believe what everyone on here pisses and moans about. Let it go. Those who think it means "Super Sport" keep thinking that, and those that don't, well don't. I always was told by every muscle head out there that it DID mean "Super Sport," but I'm not going to get all up in arms if some know it all says that I am wrong and know nothing.

Screw the turbo, I much rather the torque curve from the super charger. I gives a flying about peak numbers, only what the curve looks like. Plus I just think SC's are way sexier than turbos.

Just becase some link says it doesn't make it true because if thats the case then i will make a link of people saying ss means super sport, and no i'm not saying you made it up or anything just saying its a matter of opinion on the internet.
holy crap. this thread goes on and on..lol chevy came out with a lot of cars that SS at the end due to there big engine that was put in them. It meant Super Sport because of the huge engine and how great the performance was.the camaro, yes was a little different when it came out, but it eventually got the same Super Sport. You look at the new chevy's as most of them have SS cuz of there huge ass engine. Impala SS, Cobalt SS/SC, Malibu SS,...you got the idea. good. Super Sport.
The letter codes (Z,G,L, etc.) are all RPO codes for identifying certain key characteristics on the vehicle. I.E. "G"85 is the RPO code for limited slip and recaros in the Cobalt just like "G"80 in my silverado indicates limited slip and 3.73 gears.

The Impala is often credited with starting the muscle car era, although the credit for that really goes to Pontiac when it released the GTO. In the 1960s, gasoline was cheap and consumer demand for power exceeded the need for efficiency. Buyers were clamoring for as much room, performance, amenities and quality as they could get for their dollars. Afraid it would lose out to an in house competition, Chevy released its muscle car, the SS, soon after. In 1961, the Impala SS (Super Sport) was introduced to the market. The SS badge was to become Chevrolet's signature of performance on many models, though it has often been an appearance package only. The Impala's SS package in 1961 was truly a performance package, beginning with the high-performance 348 in³ (5.7 L) engines (available with 305, 340, and 350 hp (230, 255 and 260 kW)) or the new 409 in³ (6.7 L), which was available with up to 425 hp. The package also inclued upgraded tires on station wagon wheels, springs, shocks and special sintered metallic brake linings. Starting in 1962, the Impala SS could be had with any engine available in the Impala, right down to the 235 in³ 135 hp inline-6. With one exception, from this point until 1969, the SS was an appearance package only, though the heavy-duty parts and big engines could still be ordered.
The exception was the Z24 option package available in combination with the standard Z03 Super Sport package. Starting in 1967, through 1969, buyers of Z24s Impalas got cars badged as "SS427" models. The SS427 included heavy duty suspension and other performance goodies, as well as a Turbo-Jet 427 in either L36 or L72 variations. Special SS427 badging inside and out were the rule, but few were sold, since "muscle car" enthusiasts were looking toward big-block intermediates like the Chevelle SS396 and Plymouth Hemi Roadrunners, which were lighter and subsequently faster off the line. Interestingly, Z24 cars could be ordered without the Z03 SS package, which meant SS427 equipment but no bucket seats or center console.

Show me where it says SS means Super Sport. It in fact says, "there were SS cars that were not Super Sports". So anybody with half a brain should be able to figure that SS doesn't automatically mean Super Sport.
1st graders could figure this out.
couldn't care less about the true meaning of the "SS" badge. all i know is GM slaps that baby on like pancakes on most chevy cars/trucks/suv's and if they made motorbikes they'd probably slap on a badge on that as well. once nissan buys shares of GM they'll slap an "SS" badge on an altima to make it an SSE-R.
Both the links provided by Darksun280 use the term "Super Sport" through out the articles, including the headers. Now I could argue that "USA" does not mean United States of America, it means United States Army (or something along those lines). I guess you can just believe what you want. To me SS=Super Sport as to many other Chevy enthusiasts. To Darksun and anybody else that wants to believe they are just letters, so be it.

Ok I tried to stay out of this thread if possible but after all the bickering im actually a little curious now. So I'm wondering if any body can just send an email to corporate Gm and ask them the meaning behind SS or what it stands for on different models. Simple nuff huh? If they'll answer emails about stage kits im sure they'll send a reply back about what "SS" stands for. Now question is whos gonna do us all a favor and send the email.
I think all of us pretty much already know. With those links you posted that said Super Sport all over them, that's black and white enough for me. If you want to prove us all wrong, go ahead and write them. I think the outcome will be dissappointing for you. I do respect you sticking to your guns though. Hell, maybe SS doesn't mean Super Sport, but it sure does make sense.
