71 nova Starter Wiring help!

ok guys, i know this is a cobalt only forum, but I am at my wits end right now, some of you may know that I own a 73 nova with an L6 engine, well I ripped that thing out and dropped in a 350 V8 ,my problem is, like a nub, I forgot to take pictures of some of the wiring, (specificaly started + coil) and I need to finish that wiring before I can hook up my new malory ignition box, any one have any ideas? (if you need pics of the wiring harness, I can supply those fairly easily)

P.S. topic is a typo, this is a 73 nova.

So what are you missing? You can use the same harness from the I6 for the 350 for the starter. As for the coil set up are you gonna run an HEI type distributer?

originaly I was going to, but the hei distributor was too big and kept hitting the fire wall, so I went with a \n external coil setup instead with a malory ignition box and an MSD distributor (the place i got my malory from didn't have teh small malory distributor >_<)

any way, I just need to know which wires go where, if you want I can take a picture of what wires I have to put on (which isn't alot)

Ok your not far off. The wires in the second pic sure look like your ALT wires. The next one down, where do they run to? Next pic I'll go in order for you. The top wire goes to the starter solinoid Now on the solinoid you see those 2 small posts on either side of the big one? You'll need to look on them and see which one is labeled with an "S" the strat stands for start. Anyway the top wire and the bottom wire in your pic goes to the "S" position on the solinoid. The big one goes to the large post in the center. the odd looking one with the big rubber boot would have gone to either the factory oil presure sensor but most likly to the temp sensor that was in the side of the head. You can still use it on the V8 but you'll need to get the correct sensor for the cars new engine.

As for the distributor do you have it wired yet?

thanks for your help, I got it figured now. I will post some sound clips once it is running in the next few days.

Nice car. If you lived closer I would come wire it up for you. As for the HEI distributer all you need is a 4 pound sledge hammer to give yourself the extra room. That is what I had to do on a 1972 nova that I used to have. Good luck with the car.

The starter grounds thru its body to the block. The hammer meathod for fitting the distributor is the very best way to make it fit!.

normaly I would agree, and that actualy did work, but than the cap wouldn't fit due to the extremely tight clearence, so I opted for a slightly more expensive non HEI style MSD Distributor, and by the gods, I have no clue how. The distributor and ignition box *despite one being malory and the other being MSD* hook together perfectly! so now all I have to do is finish the wiring and i'm done, or least, so I thought.

NOW MY HEADERS DON'T! FIT!! why you may ask? because they don't give the spark plugs enough room, the spark plugs are practicaly being pushed! I already broke one spark plug before I decided they werent worth it >_<. So now I have to try and find some stock 350 headers because this patriot brand just doesn't give enough room >_<

ok. my rant is done. any way, anyone got any 350 headers? x_x.

ya I know but they are like 10 bucks a pop at a local retailer, and they arent even in stock >_<. and I dunt know if they will even clear this... the headers I have look like they were meant for heads with the angled sparkplugs, not the stock straight ones.

Youre cousin has Awsome tastes in nova's than, specialy since the 73 and 74 are literaly exactly the same. Also, these two years were the last year of this body styling if I am correct, so even though collectors don't like them because of the smog pumps. I love them because of how rare and aggressive looking they are ^_^.

LOL! Not headERS HEADS! 23degree Bowties are what NASCAR used to use and are still HOTT!

It was more a joke then anything cause those heads are like a grand BARE!

What did your heads come off of? What year is the engine? I'll try to help you get the right ones if I can.

i do have new pics of the 67 nova ss we are working on but im waiting ill we get the new oil pan in and the engine in place. its got the 9" in the rear now. but we found that the wheels were too big. about .5" too far forward. we need to: adjust the rear suspension further, or get smaller tires, or cut the body so they dont come in contact with the fender.

1$ bare is chump change for heads. the new ford d1 heads are 7000 bare. thats before any machining. the heads id like to use for my 65 are 3200.
