Across the west in the SS
Across the west in the SS
Well, I am in the process of moving from Everett, WA. to Scottsdale, AZ and am driving the SS. Since the company is moving me, I could have flown, or they will pay me milage +food\hotel when driving...I decided that it would be fun to drive!
Last Thursday the furniture was all packed and shipped and on Monday my Neon was shipped and my two cats were flown to Arizona...luckily my company is paying, because that costs a ton!
Originally I was deciding between driving the Neon R\T down, or the SS since there may be snow in the Siskiyous, and having the Cobalt would suck. Once it looked clear though I decided that I would drive the Cobalt and have the Neon transported...I'm glad I made that choice!
OK - first day I drove about 700 miles, and because of severe fog most of that time I could not go to fast. Once I got out of the mountains in North Cali, I was able to open it up some and did some stretches at about 100 mph or so...
Second day today I drove less (since the company will pay for up to 2 nights in a hotel during the drive, I figured I may as well take it easy) but went from Corning, Ca to barstow CA. There were many times when I was doing 110 - 120 during open stretches where there were no other cars. There was an RSX that came up beside me (doing about 85, and he gunned it and he started to pull away.) When I stopped day dreaming, I decided that there was no way in h#ll that I would let an RSX pull on me, so I dropped it into 4th and immediately started pulling him in. His passenger kept looking back as I was gaining, and it was about 10 seconds later that I was passing him and the look on his face, and his passengers gestures at the driver to go faster as I was catching up to them were priceless.
Oh yeah, but what pissed me off was in Bakersfield lined up at an onramp and some woman rear-ends me... Luckily we were in stop and go so there was no real damage, but it still left a mark from the screw in her license plate holder in my bumper...
That pisses me off, going less than 5mph and she still wasn't even paying enough attention to the road to avoid an accident...
I stopped at a couple of rest areas yesterday, and the SS got a lot of comments and questions about it. This one older guy wanted to know if there was a 4 door version, and a couple others said nice car. On the way out of one of the rest areas, this guy in a Civic yelled as I was pulling out of my parking space something about it not being able to take him....He kinda peeled out when leaving and was going kind of fast, but I probably got the best start of my life in that car and caught up and passed him in no time...I slowed down so that we were even and yelled over and asked if he wanted to race now that we were both ready....he kept pretending to ignore me and I finally got ahead of him for good...even when I would slow down, he still wouldn't even come up to me and would stay back...
Looking back, if I was in the Neon, I'd still probably a long way behind where I am now...
I've also been keeping track of gas milage, etc. I haven't done the final numbers yet because I have been reseting the stats with every tank of gas but here is about where the final numbers will end up:
MPG: Right about 29-30
Avg speed: (Including the time in traffic, idiling, and driving around lost in different cities): 67MPH
Total Miles driven in 2 days: about 1,300
Sorry about the long post, but I'm tired and didn't feel like editing out the junk so you'll have to deal with it
