Does anyone know if you can disconnect an airbag sensor if you disconnect the battery? I think I've run into one, and don't want to mess with it unless I know for sure. Someone with a service manual would be very helpful.

Which "airbag sensor"

The one on the passanger seat? One in the steering wheel? Or the actual sensors that tell the airbags to go BOOM!

 

Being that I run a collision center I can help you out with this.

1. If you are going to disconnect any airbag components for any reason under any circumstances, disconnect the battery first.

2. Reconnect everything prior to reconnecting the battery.

3. Be warned that if you disconnect the battery and an airbag component, the air bag light will probably be on once you reconnect everything. That is because the airbag controle module has to be reprogrammed. Only a GM dealer can do that. That will cost you anywhere from $90-$200 to get done depending on the dealer.

Why are you wanting to disconnect the airbag sensors anyway??
P.S. All airbag electrical components are yellow.

 

Thanks, I was just needing to for conveniance, so thanks a bunch for the info. It's not yellow so I guess I was wrong. It is connected to the bracket that holds the headlight assembly. It doesn't go to anything and it seems like a likely place for one so I just assumed that is was to be safe.

Even though the Cobalt does nat have a frame since it is a unibody car, the impact sensors are little yellow or black boxes that attatch to the radiator support and frame rails.

 

Ok, I see the one that is on the rad support, it has an airbag icon on it.
