Automatic cobalts to remain turboless...

i wrote this to hahn racecraft:

I am very dissapointed to hear that you are only
working with the 2.2 liter and 2.0 liter cobalts. i
have the SS 2.4 liter cobalt and i have been waiting
for a turbo kit ever since i bought it i have the
money just sitting here. I am also very dissapointed
that ive heard you will not be offering the turbo kits
for the automatic cobalts which is what i have, im
sure there is a way to make it work so that both stick
and auto can enjoy turbo power.

they wrote back:

We are actually working on a system for the 2.4, however, we are not
offering kits for the automatics at this time. As GM releases upgrades
to the autotrans that will withstand the power we may reconsider this.
The 2.2 and 2.0 Kits will be released first, then the 2.4. All should
be available by the end of the year.

i dont know about anyone else but this really makes me mad that the autos are being shafted when it comes to power upgrades when we need them since the auto is already slowing us down. maybe if we all email them them or call them about this issue we can make them change their mind as IPT transmissions can already offer us tranny upgrades cuz i think halfcent got some stuff from them already.

Auto's are almost always shafted in sport compacts when it comes to power...they're not built to handle any extra power, there's no point in Hahn coming out with a turbo kit for a car if it's just going to rip the transmission out of it.

If you wanted to mod that extensively you really shoulda went with a standard

I guess Hahn is not doing their homework here at all. According to GM's own specs available at GM Powertrain.com, the manual 2.2 can take far less torque than the auto 2.2 before failure occurs.

Only makes sense since the 4t45e is also mated to the 3.4 V6 which puts out 205lbs-ft of torque.

Maybe someone should inform them....

Have you test driven that WRX you had been talking about yet? If you're hell bent on having a turbo automatic, sounds like that's going to be the way to go.

I just posted in this your other thread too. The L61 Cobalt turbo kit will work with either the auto or manual. I don't about any kit at all for 2.4VVT Cobalts. I'm pretty sure based on your quoted reply from them that they where talking only about the 2.4VVT.

The same 4T45E auto trans is used for both the 2.2 and 2.4 ecotec. If it won't hold up under the 2.4 then it won't for the 2.2 either. This is assuming Hahn knows what they are talking about.

Yeah, the auto can handle way more power than the manual...I'm not sure what their problem is, unless the turbo kit for the 2.4 puts out insane amounts of power, in which case it would shred the stick anyway. Hrm...

Why not? No one is punishing you, they are just smart enough to NOT produce this product.

I don't see anywhere in the email from Hahn that was posted where it says their kits will work on the 2.2 auto's...he states they are working on kits for all 3 and that they won't work on 2.4 auto's, then goes on to state the 2.2/2.0 kits are coming out first. The reason for specifically mentioning that it won't work on the 2.4 auto is probably because the original email specifically stated that he had a 2.4 auto

This thread is BS when it comes to the 2.2l. Halfcent is building a 400 hp 2.2 with a Auto (4T45E) transmission and he is going to be one of the testers for the new kit, I'm not sure about the 2.4VVT, but the 2.2 Auto will have a kit still

Why dont you just get a manual car? Are you afraid the clutch monster will bite your foot off? Handicapped maybe? You can learn to drive a manual in about 10 minutes. It's no big deal.

The folks considering hooking a turbo up to Auto cobalts...I wish you luck but I'll be shocked if you don't have MAJOR problems both initially and down the road.

Why? I asked why he wouldn't drive a manual. Being handicapped would be a good damn reason. I wasn't making fun of handicapped people.

Some people get an auto because they don't want to be bothered with all the shifting in rush hour traffic, others do it because they're scared to learn...I personally can't stand auto's, but to each his/her own. For me, an auto transmission takes alot of the fun out of driving, even if it is a high end auto that shifts well and could shave a few tenths of a second off my 1/4, for me it's just no fun.

If it's because you're affraid to learn, go out to a used lot and pretend you are interested in some used sunfire with a 5speed...bring someone with you that *can* drive standard, have him drive it off the lot, then go practice in an empty parking lot

edit: I've done this for a few of my friends...it's a ton of fun, spend 30minuts laughing my ass off.

That traffic excuse is just a reason to not learn in my opinion. I would rather have a manual in traffic. You don't have to shift gears or brake in heavy traffic if you know how to drive a manual. Just stick it a lower gear than what's needed and space out a bit from the car in front of you. With an auto you are always on the brakes in traffic.

I agree about the test drive learning. I have done that with a few friends. Learning to drive a manual really isn't hard. It's mostly getting over the anxiety of doing it.

basically i think they just dont want to deal with people complaining about their tranny's in the long run if something happens... they should offer it with some kind of disclaimer though.

celicacobalt.. im sure it will fit, you just might have to re work some piping.. i think halfcent did some upgrades to his tranny... i dont know how much it costs but the company is based in nj i think ipt performance or something...you could also probably get a 4T65-e for like 2,500 bucks.
