Automatic owners beware.....
Automatic owners beware.....
I have a warning for ALL Cobalt's with an automatic transmission......
DO NOT SPILL ANYTHING ON THE SHIFTER!!!
Last Friday I was cruising to downtown B-more when I noticed a strange click coming from the shifter every time I'd hit the brakes. But when I stopped and the locks didn't unlock automaticly I knew something was up. I started checking out my car and found out the doors, the remote start, the trunk release all didn't work and if thats not bad enough its now shifting like it has a shift kit in the trans. I work on my cars myself but with all these electrical problems popping up at once I called the dealer and made an appt. for fisrt thing this morning. When I got there they took it straight in and gave it to a tech who came back to me and asked "So how many times did you spill soda in the shifter?" I had to actualy think about that cause I'm really careful about my car what with that stupid light gray interior the sedans have. I told him only once back when I first got my car when it was about 3 weeks old and asked why. He showed me where even though I had taken the center console apart and cleaned it as best I could that some had gotted down into the lockout solinoid and when the sugar hardened it made the solinoid have to work even harder to do its job. TRANSLATION, spilling soda in the center console, ANY SODA AT ALL is very very bad! You see GM in trying to build a great little car made all the tolerences closer and that includes the shifter and its because of this that mine died. They however did cover it under warrenty because the service wrighter said even though we're pretty sure this is what caused the problem they couldn't be 100% sure which means they had to warrenty it. YEAH!
Ok so the warning is ......
DO NOT SPILL ANYTHING ON THE SHIFTER!!!!
I figured I'd post this so everyone could be warned OR if they're having any of the above listed issues what the problem could be. Good luck and just say no to drinking soda and driving!

Yeah I had this happen in my Beretta too. The shifter handle didn't want to move, and when it did it tried to wad up the little plastic piece that slides in with it. I had to remove the console plate and clean it.
Now I just drink diet, so there's no sugar... Just chemicals! LOL!

LOL! No I blame BURGER KING for over filling my cup!
Rain water is different then soda in that it contains no sugar or high frutose corn syrup
.
But water could be an issue just keep your eye on it for a while and good luck.
Bump for those in the evening.
Bumpity one more time.

Thanks for the warning. But I still don't allow food consumption of any kind in my car.
My girlfriend has almost dumped me twice when I stood firm on this rule.
But a guy has to keep to his principles.
