Canada Avg Temp

Anyone know what the average coolant temp should be? I kind of miss the old gauges with the redline for temps. So I want to know when i should start getting worried with the digital temp read out.

Wow my 09 Cobalt LT 2.2 LAP runs anywhere from 200-220 easily, I talked to a gm technician that said they changed the operating range a couple years back. Maybe 08?

Fans turn on factory around 225 degrees. Anything higher than that means something isn't working right.

2.2s hit 200's with ease. my average temp while cruising is 189 and in slooooow traffic it will hit 215 in no time.

My TC runs an average of 93C (~199F). It runs hotter in the winter by a couple degrees but I have never seen higher than 110C (230F) and that's after driving the ***** off it and having to stop for a traffic light on a super hot day .

Also, if you have the A/C on, it keeps one of the fans running, or both at low speed, depending on conditions. So your temps really shouldn't rise at all. I never used my A/C, so the fans were off completely until it warmed up over 220. Once they come on, they stay on, even if you turn the A/C back off or it shuts off because of WOT or whatever. HPT lets you adjust the temp points, so when you get tuned, have them lowered if you like. I always set mine up low.

Proper mix of coolant and water won't boil until at least 260 degrees, and under normal operating conditions the car shouldn't see over 230. Cruising speed temps seem to vary by engine, but should generally be around 200, +/- 10 degrees.

Regarding your paranoia, don't worry. If your car gets too hot, it will tell you.

thats cuz u dont live here i get an average of 175-190. but on traffic days and our "beautiful" hot humid weather i see mines go over 215-221 at times. it wont ever past 221 tho since at that point the fans always turn on and cools the engine down.

So why do the cars run hotter in the winter?

I wrecked my radiator on thanksgiving and have limped the car twice to work. Lost all coolant this morning because now I have no heat. Temps got up to 217-223 and stable but its 12 degrees outside. The engine didnt even feel hot after, There shouldnt be any damage right?

You may be allright. Only way to tell is to refill with coolant after you fix the radiator and drive it.

Cars run a little warmer in the winter probably because people aren't using A/C. That means the fans aren't turned on until 225 F.

Thanks. Were adding coolant now. Cars getting hot, no heat yet and the resovoir isnt taking coolant. Passenger side tube is hot drivers is cold. Anything were doing wrong?

Probably a little late.. I always fill them cold until you get to the "Full Cold" mark. Then start it.
