I'm driving across the country starting thursday morning and i'm wondering what speed i should set the cruise control too. What do you guys think? 70? 75? 80? What will get me the best mileage?

it's messed up like that...i don't think the guage is very correct with the stg 2. i've noticed the same thing.

i've gotten in the upper 70mpg when resetting the guage and coasting down long hills.

As an experiment, set the cruise at 50 or 55 like Joeworkstoohard mentioned and reset the MPG meter. You'll probably get like 45 MPG. Unfortunately it'll take forever to get anyplace and you'll burn more gas due to the longer travel time.

I read in an article several years back that the math works out to somewhere around 70MPH.

After that you are burning more gas than you are saving time b/c your car is having to work the engine harder to overcome drag.

Cruise control or keeping a steady foot on the gas can help as well... speeding up and slowing down wastes fuel.

Oh... and mythbusters recently proved that "drafting" behind a semi-truck at a distance of say 20-30 feet can increase your gas mileage by up to 40%. Not very safe... but proven to work.

Thanks guys. Going to try 65-70. It may be slow but it'll save me gas.

for best mileage strictly, DON'T use your cruise! how's that!

i get my best mileage, doubled with a speed tht i'm actually willing to drive between 70 and 75. i can get about 40 mpg on the highway giong between 70 and 75 just doing a few small things like let off the gas going down a hill, and accelerate slowly back up the hill. cruise control seems like it's a great idea for gas, but it's really not.

i was driving to work one day absolutely babying the gas pedal and cruising at 45 and I got 48.2 lol. Once I started driving normally though it went back down to 28 city/highway mix.

you dont even have to be behid a semi. black06ss and myself always go the track together (like a 2 hour drive) and i always lead. he generally is right on my bumper and gets 3-4 mpg more than i do
