buying a SS/SC

hey everyone. im in the market for a SS/SC and i figured there wouldnt be a better place to ask some questions. im just wondering, this car being supercharged with a decent amount of horsepower, whats likely things to have trouble with on this car? is there much trouble with the supercharger itselfs? or anything else? i know typical gm front end problems are going to be a given, just wondering if theres any extra. also if i buy one and its not stage two ill be adding the upgrade, any cons to that?

thanks everyone!

Justin

The supercharger itself is pretty solid, the two huge problems are the cat going bad early, and the power steering going out, both which are covered by chevy, so it's a decently safe car to buy, it really just depends on who owned it before you, How many miles are on it? and No cons to adding stageII, if your good at cars you may want to go with OTTP or ZZP's stage kits, cheaper and more powerful, but I personally have GMSII and its badass

the car im looking at has around 84,000 KM thats about 50,000 miles. it has a K&N cold air. otherwise i think is stock. its never been winter driven. which here in Newfoundland, Canada mean alot. theres no damage of anykind on it. looks like a nice car to pick up. and for a decent price.

coupler? is it a hard or expensive thing to fix/replace?

sounds like a pretty good deal, shouldnt have any problems with the supercharger. Definitely pick it up and post up on here!

I have never heard of any problems with the M62 supercharger having issues - I mean I've heard of issues with the M90 that the 3800's had having bearings go bad on the snout or what ever you call it, but nothing about these cars.

IMHO, look here for the NL subforum, and try to meet up with any locals ~ they should be able to give you a pretty good heads up on in's & out's on the car, as well as opinions as to what they would look for if they were in your shoes...

actually, I'll make it easier for you - here's the subforum for Newfoundlander's;

Canadian North East - Cobalt SS Network

good luck!!

stock is 30ish(i dont remember)lb injectors 3.3 inch pulley
stage 2 consists of 42lb injectors and a 3.1 pulley and a ecu reflash. you can add an air intake it will help.

as far as the coupler, it makes it so a s/c doesnt sound like marbles. probably unnecessary replacement unless you push your car past stage 2.

dude i still say go with it, you arent gonna have issues, i would definitely go with an intake as you wont be able to hear you're supercharger without it, and exhaust, yes, hahn makes the best sounding exhaust for the sc, but if you wanna go 2.5 in go with magnaflow, otherwise def. hahn

I had a K&N intake on my SS/SC and it rubed on my brake lines.
Check underneath the intake to make sure that the brake lines
from the Anti-Lock brake control box dont contact the intake.

ok guys, im finally around to buying a car, looks like the one i was looking at might be a little out of my reach. im looking at one now. 2005 stage 2 with a new stage 2 clutch with 150,000 km. i offered him $9500. is it worth it? also how can you tell if a cobalt is actually a stage 2? theres the link ot the car.

i think that the interior, exterior, lack of engine bay, undercarriage photos make it un-buyable.

Eh, I mean it is a cronic problem in trying to get the most out it in first gear but there are of course modifications to help alleviate it. I personally had no problem peddling it and mine was bone stock but then again I wasn't really getting full drive due to the throttle cutting. Needing to pedal is the reason I lost from a dig to my brother when we had our cars. I have no idea how much better the traction mods help the car accelerate from a dig TBH though, wish I could have found out.
