Buying a used SS/SC

I'm in the market for a used SS/SC since I drove one at a Chevy dealer and fell in love. I'm curious what everyone thinks I should be looking for, I will probably throw a GMPP Stage kit on there eventually, but I want one that hasn't been beaten to hell by the PO. I would think I have a better chance of this if I look for a bone stock one or even one with only a CAI than one with full exhaust or something, does that sound approx. right? I realize theres no way of telling for sure, but I would think that would up my odds. When I take it for a test drive, is there anything I should be watching for other than smooth shifting, appropriate boost and good throttle response? I also feel like I should take it somewhere and have an expert inspect it, would a Chevy dealer's service depot be the best bet? Thanks,
-Sam

PS This is my first post, so if I put this in the wrong topic be gentle

try to get one with the limited slip diff and the recaro seats. You will be much happier with that package..i know cuz i didn't get it. Also, low miles is a must, and do NOT get one with any mods, unless they are gmpp parts. A modded one means the previous owner was a tuner head like us and most likely beat the living **** out of it.

Welcome to the addiction.

I wouldn't say that a modded cobalt would be driven any harder than a non-moded one. The odds are simply better. Its like buying a car from a women. Odds are she didn't drive it harder than a guy, but I know girl who drive some hard, like some boys that dont drive hard at all.

Also even if stock, the person might of just taken the modds parts off and sold them seperalty
I would bring it to a machanix, if you can find a used one with some kind of warranty from gm would be good. Stuff to look for is smooth shifting, no smoke when starting the car, odd engine noise, tranny noise when shifting. Another thing to look for is the tires. If the tires are nice and smooth, means he didnt take turns fast. If the sides of the tires are like rough, or the trends are rough means he did burn outs or took corner fast. Little things to look for. But bottom line, used is used so its buyer beware!! Good luck, their are some good ones out there!! You'll love it!

Yeah the recaro's are a must, but some lightly modded are alright, heck save you from putting the parts on. By lightly modded i mean GMPP stage 2, CAI, catback. STAY AWAY from someone with a 2.8inch pulley!! They are not good for the motor even if 75% of people here will tell you they have one and no prob!

From what I've gathered a 2.8 will push the duty cycle on the injectors into the no fly zone, upwards of 90%. I've got an LT so I don't have any experience so somebody correct me if I'm wrong here.

I guess I'm the only one who didn't want the recaros. lol You only need the LSD if you are going to autox. Otherwise I say save your money for some performance goodies.

Never buy a modded used car. NEVER! The thing is you don't know what other mods may have been on the car, if the supporting mods were done, and if the car was taken care of or driven hard. I say just get you a nice low milage stock car and mod it the way you like.

3.0 pulley will have you up in that rang with stock injectors. 2.8 is a no go. on stock tune with a 2.8 i sure piston protection will kick in and some other safty features and timming gets pulled out with it. what im gonna do is rock a 2.8 pulley and cap the boost at 14-15 psi so i will just get to full boost sooner and get the added tq than with a 3.0. I'm giving my 42 pound injectors to my friend so thats the only way i can use the 2.8 with out blowing the damn car up again over time.

I used to think that too but that LSD is a much stronger diff than stock. from what i've seen if you dont have the diff and you track race or do alot of dig races on the street theres a good chance eventually that that stock diff will blow.

The 2.8 will push your duty cycle to well over 90%. This means lean out condition for your motor + no good bro.

Like I said, look for something reletively stock and just do a good inspection of the car. A used car will always be a used car = Risk... but cheaper

guys please dont bring pullys and IDC's into this thread...i hate re-reading the same ****.

Buying a used SS/SC is an odd thing still cuz of how new they still are.

I'd say eather have the GM dealer or some trusted outside mechanic take a look at the clutch....that has proven to be a very week point.

also if it still has the stock p-zero tires on it AND they are good shape then thats telling me that the car was driven very good and soft.

i smoked my stock tires in about 16k sooooooooooooooooooo

NICE TO SEE ANOTHER MICHIGAN GUY!

You can find one owned by an old retired person (me) that is garage kept and driven like there's an egg between the foot and the pedal. It's for sale in the classified section.
