Catalytic Converter

Hey guys, it seems my catalytic converter is shaking and making a noise now every time the rpms are between 800-950. My 2.2 has 121,000 miles, so it sounds about right that the stock catalytic converter is taking a dump. My question is it a bad idea to hollow it out or just spend the money on a new one? Besides my headlights, rims, and ARP wheel studs..... this car is 100% stock and I want it to stay that way. It's my daily driver, so I don't want any problems or issues with it. If your vote is to spend the money on a catalytic converter, what brand and where do I buy one for an 06 2.2 with an Automatic?

So I called up GM for the part number that I need (22970505), and they want 697.00 for it............. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA No way in hell!!! I'll go aftermarket.

Also, if I were to put an offroad pipe on there (no cat), would it give me any trouble or codes?

Probably yes.
But you can have a tunner delete the code so that you don't get one.
Thats what they did for me for my aftermarket cat.

Do you have emissions in your part if FL? If you do either replace it or go to Midas and get them to put a universal one in. That said these cars sound like crap without one.

Here is that post with the oem pipe: Brand New OEM Catalytic converter. Chevrolet Cobalt LS. If you go aftermarket, you will trip the o2 inefficiency code. Not a big deal, can be fixed with some defoulers. I've been running mine for two weeks now and no issues, just louder lol.

i gutted my cat.
i also got magnaflow muffler. this set up was a little too loud for me, on road trips and stuff like that.
so i added a cherry bomb before the muffler.
love it now.
2.2 aswell

was raspy and loud before the bomb was added in

I found a universal cat made by Flow Masters off of summitracing.com I'm thinking instead of wasting 700 bucks for an OEM one or getting a check engine code to just buy the universal cat from Flow Masters, hack the stock pipe, and call it a day. Should I expect any trouble from that?

Aftermarket cats have a tendency to trip codes as they flow more than what it's programmed to read. Slap a defouler on if it does and see what happens.
