Check engine light came on

My check engine light just came up a few days ago. Its a 2.2 liter 2005 never had any problems, but I have about 52,000 miles only done oil changes at a local shop with normal fluid checks. Its a steady check engine light it dose not flash which in the book says is a bigger problem. My coolant looks low I am do that ASAP. any other ideas? my warranty is expired so I know its gunna hurt my wallet if i gotta go to the dealer.

go to autozone or something. they scan the code for free. you'll know where to go from there

Goto autozone or advance auto or another auto poarts store like that and have them scan the code. Without the code it is impossible to help.

Have you noticed the car running any differently? Change in gas mileage? Those kinds of things are good information to know as well.

If you have any autozones nearby, they'll hook the car up to a scanner and give you the code for free. bring us the code, and we should be able to help you more.

If you haven't noticed anything at all goofy with the way the car is running (high/low/inconsistent idle, stumbles, hesitation, knocks, decreased mileage, etc), it might be something as simple as a gas cap not sealed well.

one other thing - low coolant shouldn't cause a check engine light. there is a separate dic message for low coolant.
