Clutch Questions

So i have a 2005 G85 cobalt ss stage 3 266whp/244wtq. i had bought a spec stage 3 clutch to replace the one i have now as it is slipping. but after hearing bad things about it i decided to return it and go a different route. I have not yet decided what to get but i really want a clutch kit that can hold at least 400hp/tq at the wheels but is not to expensive. looking to spend 500-600 tops. what do you think i should get. and has anyone else on here heard or know of spec clutches on cobalts not performing well? zzp told me they had one break on them on the dyno...what type of clutch do you guys think i should get?

use the search for the forum man. idk how many times this has been covered. go to google and type "best clutch for lsj cobaltss.net" then boom all your answers come up lol.

go with the upgraded LSJ GMPP clutch from crate engine depot, get all your bolts, and alignment tool and then go to zzp and get the flywheel. much cheaper from them then it is from crate engine depot.

Pretty much this. Unless you have aspirations to break hp records you won't need a massive clutch setup. You can also grab the LuK LFW285 flywheel, I got that one because I found it cheaper than the ZZP one, and LuK is one of the largest OEM clutch suppliers so why not.

If you're looking for a beefy clutch, going cheap is not one thing you should be doing.

its to late thought. I am a brand new cobalt owner. when i bought the car it needed a clutch. i knew almost nothing about cobalts or clutches eaither but i def just wanted to get something that would hold under alot of power. i am putting a custom supercharger on the car that will make around 400 HP and can make alot more with a smaller pulley and injectors. that is why i got the spec stage 3...before i had it installed i heard a bunch of bad things so i sent it back but i have not heard anything bad about the flywheel so i kept it.

Well now that we know your future mod plans, we may have suggested a different clutch to use. A lot of people swear by different clutches, and at the same time other have had nothing but issues with clutches people swear by. Really your main choices are Spec, KY, and Southbend. I've heard good and bad about all three just reading around here, but KY and Southbend seem to be the most popular choices. If you plan on making this your DD you might want to look into a full faced disk, as the combo of the aluminum flywheel and a pucked disk might make a daily driver a bit intolerable, especially if you get stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic.

ok. i have heard of people using the gmpp kit up to 500 hp. is that true? and why does the flywheel affect the way the car drives?...zzp reccomends i use south bend....but they also told me it was take about 12k in mods to get to 400hp.

If you really know how to drive(not being offensive), the GMPP/LNF clutches can go pretty far. I don't remember seeing 500hp, but there are guys with big turbo swaps over 400hp/tq that have the GMPP clutch. As to the flywheel, you reduce the amount of rotational inertia when swapping from steel to aluminum. While this does allow the engine to rev faster/easier, it'll take more rpm to get the car off the line without killing it due to the reduced mass. Combine that with a pucked clutch disk which doesn't really allow slip and you have yourself a lightswitch for a clutch, which would suck completely when stuck behind others.

As to the amount for mods, I don't know much about the supercharged LSJ's, but from my understanding with your power goals a turbo swap would probably be more economical from a financial standpoint.

Gmpp is fine. Your mods sound like a pipe dream anyway. "Custom supercharger"

Nothing worse than dding an aggressive clutch, especially if you don't need it.

exactly what they said about the flywheel

you want 400hp in an lsj your not gonna spend 12K but youll spend a decent amount for a turbo swap or a TVS 1320 with all supporting mods and e85
