Cobalt handling and performance

1.I have 98 eclipse turbo and i am considering trading it in for a cobalt, rsx, celica. I was just wondering how well th cobalt handles and how quick it is. you guys all own one so i figured you would know.

2. also..is it worth gettin a cobalt LS ? I intend on moding my car too., the SS is hard to find and possibly a lil over my buget. thanks guys

To sum it up, the LS is not quick, its good for a economy car, there is currently little aftermarket support available, not engine tune. Once the ECU can be flashed, supers and turbos should bolt right on, but we are still waiting for the tuning software. I really can't tell you how mine handles because I have never really pushed it, but always feels planted on all 4, even over dips and bumps.

The price difference is small to get to the 2.4L SS.

Coming from that eclipse I would say get the 2.0 SS/SC. If it doesn't have the G85 you might be able to work them as low as 18K. I've seen them being sold for 17K. The suspension on the SS/SC is great. I've taken onramps at 60 before and held like a champ with no tire squeal.

If you really want to get into modding the car, you can always get the 2.4 NA SS and make a turbo project out of it. Tuning is out for that car so the only thing stopping you is money.

My friend has an RSX-S, and between our two cars, the cobalt is definitely faster (stock), and would go faster on a road course. The LS is not a performance car. At least go for the 2.4L SS if you want performance.

Take each one for a test drive and compare yourself too.

i disagree with the statements being made about the LS, i think its a kinda speedy car (off the line). i have driven my bro's celica and i can tell you that i found my LS more enjoyable to drive.

i agree that the SS models ("SS" and "SS Supercharged") are the superior car, but for the price difference between a SS and a LS, you could easily spend less than $500 to beef up the suspension. theres a few intakes and cat-backs available, not many headers still though.

WS Fraizer had the best idea though, take em all for a drive.

I own a 97 eclipse turbo myself, and I can tell you that the Cobalt handles MUCH better than the eclipse. It is a quicker car than the stock eclipses as well...

if u intend on modding, get the 2.0 s/c... the 2.4 has been getting shafted with aftermarket support (mostly), although HPtuners just released their support for it.

in reality, if a 2.0 is out of ur budget, how are u going to afford the substantial modifications that it will take to make a 2.2 even catch up to s/c-forget the fact of going faster.. bc once u turbo the 2.2 to get it to go as fast as a stock 2.0, now u gotta build motor.. crazy $$$. not good for some1 on a budget

a 2.2 is quick off the line to what? 30mph? (im sorry just bustin ***** )

if ur really interested in modding i would recommend the 2.0, or at least the 2.4. it doesnt seem like ur exactly loaded (like me) so starting off with the faster car with more aftermarket support is the right way to go

I have to agree with you and I'm speaking from experience. It's alot more fun and easy to make an already fast car faster when the aftermarket is so willing to help you do just that. Don't grab an RSX, cause if you want anything faster than 14's, expect to spend $3000 plus for the turbo or all motor build. Then you can expect more money dumbed for wheels, tires, suspension, clutch, axles, tuning, installation of all that BS. The list goes on and on. Get a Balt that has EVERYTHING you'd want in a car. Sounds like to me the SS/SC is gonna sell itself to you if you test drive it. Cause if you think the LS will be suitable to start with, then you'll think the SS/SC is suitable to end with, I assure you, It's very impressive. The car has a head start on most all other 4 bangers as far as "performance parts" on the stock vehicle w/ the exception of the SRT-4. Only think you'll need right away for the SS/SC is Stage 2 (which you can bargain free of cost when purchasing the car), ingalls stiffy dampener, and of course a better clutch to put down all that power. Do it man, buy the SS/SC.
