Does it really matter....... It's his car. If he wants to put on Z28, RS, or SS emblems then let him. If you or someone else doesn't like it, keep it to yourself. (and laugh about it in silence!)

Well, i actually am going to agree with Sh1ft...

Now, that's cool that you want to fix your car and make it different, i understand, good for you. Now, there's a difference between modifying your car to be different, and trying to make it something that doesn't exist. Such as an "RS" cobalt. "Oh, but it DOES exist, your wrong!" No, all the new "RS" package is, are decals.

I'm pissed at GM for associating the "RS" label with some POS sticker package. I think they should have put an upgraded SS/SC suspension, a fancy lip kit, some nice, chrome 18" wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, and the option of getting the 2.2, the 2.4, or the 2.0 motor in it. So basically make it a suspension and appearance package, just like they did when it first appeared on Camaro's. (it was a Z-28 suspension package when it first came out, but in the 3rd and 4th gen, it added the lip kit.) That way you could get an RS/SS or just an RS. I think that IF GM made this package, and priced it competitively it would sell like hotcakes. You get a race-ready suspension, killer looks, but without the price of an SS...sound good to me!

The reason why i'm not a fan of the homemade "RS" package, is because your saying that your car is a true RS, when it's all just for looks, just like that stupid GM package. Now, i understand we all can't afford SS/SC's, and that's fine. I just don't see your argument there, because he never said anything like "why didn't you just buy a SS/SC, all the other cobalts are slow...." like some idiot. He just said he didn't like it, and that's his opinion.

I'm not some idiot on a SS/SC powertrip...i'm not like that. I hold nothing against those of you that put RS badges on your car. I just hate how GM put that badge into that package and pissed on it's history.

Actually, the RS package when introduced in 1967 was an appearance only package. RPO Z22 included: Covered headlights, anodized aluminum rocker/roof/wheel-lip moldings, black-bezel tail lamps, separate parking and backup lights, plus RS emblems on the gas cap, grille, and fenders.

There were no suspension or engine upgrades on the RS package. If you added a 350 it automatically upgrade the car to an RS/SS350, but if you ordered an RS with a six, it was base suspension. The RS was available at launch, September 1966. The Z/28 didn't become available until December 1966.

The second generation RS included the split front bumper, body color door handle inserts, bright lip molding and chrome accented lights.

Third generation RS became the base car - designation for any Camaro that wasn't a Z28 or Iroc-Z.

4th Generation RS included a ground effects kit.

So, there is a lot of history of the RS being an appearance package. Nonetheless, I understand what you're saying. Pretty much all of those packages offer more than just some decals. There are substantial appearance changes - but not performance upgrades.

Never once have I referred to my car as a 'Cobalt RS'... never once have I represented it as such... I just have always had either the Cavalier RS or Type 10 in the past. I thought it might be nice to make an RS of my own, just something a little different. My last Cavalier, my 98, I did up as an RS... I added a Z24 cluster, old school 87 Z24 wheels, body colored bumpers, a tasteful spoiler, some stripes, the convertible strut bar, the sway bars from the Z underneath and upgraded to the Z24 rotors, calipers and drums. Was it a real RS? No, but it was more fun to drive than it was when I started. I received a bunch of compliments on how it looked. I actually took a trophy at a car show with that car... (and no, I wasn't the only one in the class either )

I suppose alot of this does come from the fact that i have ALWAYS wanted a 68 Camaro RS. If offered the option of sawing off a body part for that car, I'd start hacking immediately. Since those cars are beyond pricey, even for a field rat, well, you make do with what you've got.

I didn't just stick emblems on it and go, 'uyuh... it's an RS now'. With this car, i already have ordered the SS fascias and body moldings (because I like them better than my nose). I plan on adding the Cavalier Connection turbo kit to this car, just for the hell of it. Lately its not so much a question of raising the money to do the things I want, it's finding the time. I figured that if I am going to make it my own RS, I may as well do something to make it rally sporty, not just another pretty face.

I'm sorry that some of you people are having such a hard time with it. And it kind of pisses me off that lately, you show a little imagination, stray from the precious status quo, you get swatted. It's a forum and people here are like piranha- smell blood and it's a frenzy. It does feel good to dump on someone you don't know, doesn't it?

Excuse me for trying to do something a little more fun with MY base Cobalt.

Actually IMO the Cobalt SS really is the RS/SS of the bunch. The SS/SC is really the SS IMO. I think GM's really been goofing with their badging in recent years.

Seems to be the way of our whole society these days. God forbid you have different views, like different things, or don't dress like the A-holes on MTV...

I agree. i think the 2.4 SS should be dubbed the "RS" Cobalt instead.

I know this is a little off topic but I can remember in 2002 when Chevy switched from the 2.4 Twin Cam to the Ecotec and dropped the Z24 trim level in the cavalier. I dont know how many people I ran into that insisted they had a Z22. I even remember a few old posts on jbody were a couple of dealers were caught advertising the "Z22" cavalier. It's all just a marketing gimmick. I think that unless the car has features that actually enhance performace it should not have any trim level at all. NO LS OR LT COBALTS
Just

1. Cobalt
2. Cobalt NA/SS
3. Cobalt SC/SS

My mom had a 99 Cavalier Z22... it was an option package that seemed to be sold in Vermont and New Hampshire as well as Quebec. She had the decals taken off the car before she took delivery of it.

i was sort of miffed that GM dropped the Z-prefix from the Cavalier line... LS Sport just didn't sing.

Anyways.

Who really gives two ***** what other's say...it's your car go ahead and do what you want to it . On the flip side however it is a public forum and others are going to have their opinions, some of course much stronger than others, so I wouldn't really expect anything less.

As for the whole "Really Slow" comment, Merc was clearly joking (he's even commented in the past how he likes the base models as well, yes good memory ) and I'm pretty sure Gorilla was as well...people tend to jump all over it everytime someone brings it up. As long as the car serves your needs and you're happy with it does it really matter if someone calls it "slow" (joking or not)? I actually find these forums contain very few if any SS/SC "elitists", just a boatload of smart asses . Of course it's "slow" in comparison (though still no slouch vs others in its class) the damn thing's meant for economy first not performance .

Anyways, I'm done now, don't ask how it ended up being that long but I feel better. Good luck with the project, make sure to get some pics up once you get things underway, I for one am curious to see how it turns out.

I Think It's Cool To Personalize Your Car, Make It Your Own. I Will Say Though From Where I Work I Understand Where People Are Coming From. There Is Nothing Cheesier Than Seeing A Silverado With Caddy Emblems On It Or Where I Live Every Honda With Nsx Badges Or Every Car With Type R Badges (like Chevy Or Ford Type R With Honda Type R Badges) I Think Its The Different To Personalize Your Car Not Try To Make It Something Its Not Just By Adding A Badge And Wing Etc....
