Cobalt for a Sky RL

Hey y'all,

About two months ago I started putting the cash away for a ZFR turbo to hit that magic 400WHP mark. I talked about it with some car friends at work and my brother and it kind of made me realize that even with better tires the only thing the car will have going for it is being a highway monster.

Highway pulls tickle me pink as much as the next guy but I wouldn't mind having some traction in 2nd gear for a change either.

So I started looking at craigslist and dealers for a LNF Kappa. I love the powertrain but I'm tired of having FWD.

The question really just becomes would a SKY RL be an "upgrade" or should I move onto bigger and better V8 RWD. If I get a SKY it will instantly go under the knife for 400-450WHP. Can the ZFR even get that high without E85 or Meth?

Really needed to put this out there, its driving me crazy.

TLDR : Want a LNF Kappa, is it worth it?

Any specific reasons off the top of your head? Just to clarify I'm not talking for a DD.

The ZFR isn't a direct bolt on for the Kappas yet. There is currently a small clearance issue. ZZP is working on it.

If you love the LNF but hate wheelspin and don't mind a two seater, then the Sky RL is a nice car. Not sure if it's an upgrade though. That's a matter of opinion.

Maybe look into getting a Goat or Mustang? See if someone local will let you drive one. If you go V8 RWD, your main regret will be that you'll wish you didn't do it sooner. A used Evo is a better upgrade to an SS/TC than a Sky RL. That is if you can find one for < $20K without being trashed.

Good luck.

I'd trade a Cobalt for a Sky any day if it wasn't gonna be my daily driver. The Sky has looks the Cobalt can't match, and RWD. Toss in a manual and win-win.

It would be a upgrade but I'd say no. My mom has one haha, I think they are fugly and the inside is tiny and uncomfortable. They are soo wide too. I'd say get out of the 4 cylinder game

Thanks for the replys guys, glad I'm in good company here. About the V8 RWD, I drove my buddies 2007 Z06 and it instantly made me want to sell my Cobalt or just burn it to the ground. Hoping the Sky will help me avoid that feeling by still being RWD.

Also, the sound of a turbo is just... I can't really put it into words. Sex?

A Terminator is always on the menu, but I'd like to keep it ~18K so I can still afford a DD and an upcoming wedding. I don't think I'll ever find a "nice" termi for that

The sky isn't exactly a looker, but neither is the cobalt. And yeah the only thing keeping me from going ZFR is I like second gear traction too.

The kappa is the platform that they make the Saturn Sky and the Pontiac Solstice on. It the same as when cars are called J Bodies or F Bodies or Deltas.

Also, I think a murdered out Black SKY can look pretty damn good from what I've seen. The looks aren't an issue for me.

Meh, I gotta agree with Bpacak, Not really sold on the looks of the Sky....IMO I think that our cars actually look Better on the outside than the Sky, But its just my opinion tho, lol.

I was looking into them but I just couldn't picture myself driving a convertible so I passed. I think there are aftermarket hardtops available though.

The Solstice looks like the aborted mentally retarded offspring of a second gen Neon and a TVR.

Agreed, I'd wreck a solstice to get a SKY if that were an option. The Sky might weigh ~150lbs more, but man is the solstice ugly compared to it.

My opinion. Your opinion. Solstice looks sick and the LS7 swap just makes it that much cooler IN MY OPINION

Meh. I'm honestly not a fan of the SBC or LS motors. Swap a northstar in though and I'll start drooling.

As my screen name implies, I'm a ***** for OHC engines.

An LS swapped Kappa is indeed awesome. But not exactly what I have in mind. I'd rather just build a 4 banger that I know fits before ordering 4.5k worth of kit and then buying a motor and tranny and driveshaft.

Before this gets more derailed I just want to say that there is enough positive support here to look more into the SKY RL. Also, my friend just bought a Scion FRS and I can't wait to show him what a poor choice of car it was.
