F35's are getting extremely hard to find as time goes on. Best bet would be starting to plan swapping in an F23(fairly stout I hear) or spending the coin for an F40.

F23 is a cheap and fairly easy swap. You can complete the swap for less then the price of buying either an F35 or F40 transmission.

Where are you located? I have a couple F35's in my garage.

The F23 is the base model 5-spd. They're surprisingly stout for being "rated" weaker. The big bonus is there are a few different options for gearing, and when/if you grenade it they're a dime a dozen. Probably be the route I'll go when I blow mine.

The F40 swap is also popular, and OTTP and ZZP make kits for it.

F23 is plentiful and cheap. I bought mine with 40k miles on it for $300 or so. I bought new NAPA axles, OTTP trans mounts, and an OTTP STS... and all that together was still under $1000... which is what I would have paid to buy another F35 (which DEFINITELY would have eventually failed). The F23 is "stronger" because it uses a 3-shaft design versus the F35's 2-shaft design. That's part of why the F35 flexes as much as it does and allows third gear to destroy itself in high horsepower applications.

My opinion of the F40 is that it is only popular because people want to say they have a 6-speed. The F40 gearing generally still sucks (like all GM transmissions), they are just as rare and hard to find as the F35 (aka $$$), and the kits are super pricey. Not to mention, they weigh a good 30lbs or so more than an F23 or F35... meaning you're actually losing some amount of performance by installing one. I do not see the advantage of an F40 swap other than to say you have a 6-speed (and not even a good one, at that ). I'm honestly still trying to understand how one of the cheapest car communities that I've been a part of... has embraced such an expensive, semi-useless swap.

What are your mods and what do you do with the car? Do you care about highway fuel mileage more than fun and quick?

Also, what car do you have? LSJ or LNF? It makes a difference.

you only needed 2.2 liter axles, shifter, and mounts to make this swap? I’m kicking myself in the ass now for rebuilding my f35 twice and still having issues

It depends on LNF vs LSJ. LSJ's can use base model axles as their wheel bearing splines match. I'm not sure what the LNF's have to use, but I know they have a different spline count in the wheel bearings (why does GM do stupid **** like change the spline count? Seems stupid.).

Otherwise, yes... it's a pretty simple swap.

An LSJ needs the following:
  • Transmission (I used an F23 Throw Out Bearing w/ OTTP's SS clutch line; I've seen people use F35 ones with a bent or custom TOB tube.)
  • Front trans mount
  • Upper trans mount
  • F23 shift box
  • F23 shift cables
  • F23 axles
  • And you then need to either grind down one lug for clearance with the LSJ thermostat housing... OR I think you can swap to an early base model thermostat housing (I believe 08+ thermo housings have different sized heater hose connections - I know the LNF does for sure).
You MUST keep and continue to use the OE transmission spacer.

And as a word of warning, if you jump to the XFE transmission (or the Regal F40), your cruise control will not work in 5th (or 6th for the F40) gear - at least not on an LSJ. I'm curious if the XFE will work on an LNF though; I know the F40 doesn't. There's something hardcoded into the BCM... I think some sort of speed to RPM to load relation exceeds a certain threshold and it'll constantly kick the cruise control off as soon as it's engaged.

I went with the XFE because I liked that 1-4 were very similar to the OE LSJ F35... and I thought that for my big turbo car that loves highway rolls, it would be better. If I do it again though, I'm going with an 05-08 HHR F23. 4.17 vs 3.63 (XFE) final drive. As long as you have traction... shorter gears are faster.

I really appreciate the information!

I may have to look around the local junkyards and see if I can find a 2.2 manual.

I am also kicking myself for not buying an f35 when they were going for 700$ on zzp, but this doesn’t sound like a bad deal.

I got my transmission off of Car-Part.com. LKQ Online is another good resource, but their shipping charges are absurd.

Then used local junk yards for the shifter cables, shifter base, trans mounts, etc. I do have two stock F23 mounts (the required upper and front) if you end up needing them.

Lower right corner of the plate... what's the number? 4.05 or 3.82?

3.82 means it is out of an 08-10 LNF. 4.05 is out of an LSJ (the better selection).

If you got the 3.82... then good luck. The longer the final drive; the more likely you are to destroy 3rd gear again... especially on the stock turbo with a ton of low and mid range torque.
