your check engine light will come on and then a diagnostic tool will have to be connected to your vehicle to extract the code which the error occured in..then they just basically tell you what u need...this can def come in handy to prevent yourself from gettin ripped off from a mechanic who assumes you know nothing about your car

Sweet post

Yet another (possibly stupid) question...will OnStar give you these codes when you run the diagnostic through that or will they just tell you if it's critical/non-critical?

On Star will only tell you if it is cricical or not, (as far as the last time I spoke with them). Also only a DTC (code) that is emissions related will set a SES light. Any of the (P) codes.

OK guys I split this off from the DTC list just so we could keep it clean and seperate for sticky purposes.

To answer a question. You can get the codes from a odbII code reader, autotap is one of them.

I dunno anything about onstar.
