E-brake question

I drove from NJ to ND about a month ago. I think when we stopped in WI or maybe even before that I went to pull up my e-brake, which i normally really have to put some weight behind to get it up there, i practically ripped the thing right off. It's really ****** loose and barely holds my car now.

How do I go about fixing that? And why did it happen? It's not like I drove with it up or anything.

any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

one of the cords going to each rear brake must have slipped. it happened to me a while back.

take it to the dealer if you have a warranty still, or just take apart the center console back to the rear cup holder and you will see what I mean. I took only a little bit of messing to get it back on.

Better yet:

It could be that one of the star wheel adjusters failed(if it is drums)
