exhaust rant..

I really hope someone out there can design an exhaust system that sounds appealing. I'm really getting sick of going to car shows and hearing other four-cylinder NON turbocharged cars that sound nice and deep and have a good tone (there was an RSX with "toda" exhaust for example, it sounded great!). I'm not at all trying to offend anyone who has an aftermarket exhaust system it's just mho, but nothing really sounds good to me yet. The Corsa Touring system sounds decent, but I'm still iffy on purchasing it. I realize a lot of the sound generated roots from the engine and it's operation itself, but...

eh...I'm done ranting.

LOL! Man I miss her...

She took down a lot of un-suspecting LS1 owners in her time ("Oh it's just a non-pi bolt on GT") ...and I miss that the most lol.

you know im just bustin your ***** what exhaust did you have on it?

you're not missing much these days anyway. They finally come out with an aftermarket lower intake manifold, manufacturer claims 25whp gains. 50magazine does a swap and dyno runs, and sure enough it net 25hp; on a VT shortblock (higher compression), stage 2 fox lake heads, stage 2 comp cams and all the bolt-ons possible. thats not the worst of it, but I dare not post it on a GM forum

Wow, geez I am really out of touch I had no clue they had an aftermarket lower intake! Who makes it? It was pretty depressing doing all that work to the mustang and just barely coming out over 300rwhp before tuning...but it sure did wonders at the track! I had a saleen blower too, which I sold to my friend w/ a Bullitt. He's got full exhaust, Chromoly K-member, 31-splines, all kinds of suspension stuff (control arms, panhard bar, etc.) and he's hitting 11's on BFG DR's. I'm really impressed with his car, that's on 8psi too lol (stock block).

TODA exhausts for the rsx are also $1,000. :p and yes, they sound so good but so do the comptech and greddy for the fraction of the cost and exact if not better performance. just wait it out man, i'm sure companies will start interest on the cobalt.

Good lord! That's a hefty price. DC do you know what it is exactly that they do in their design vs. the "typical" exhausts that make it sound so much better (i.e. muffler design, etc)?

Back to the original topic...I have to agree with you, although I don't think I have heard a N/A 4 cyl that I liked the exhaust on yet. I like how mellow the stock sound is, and from the clip that someone posted the Corsa Touring is almost identical in the sound department.

Milltek Has a sweet sounding exhaust for the turbo 2.0 Astra. I wonder if they could make one that sounded that good for the Cobalt.

i don't know the specific details on the designing process but i got this from their website that might help out.

The TODA DC5 High Power Exhaust System is a fully engineered performance exhaust system. During the course of development, various pipe diameters, muffler designs, and bends were tested, until the final design was conceived.

After receiving countless customer requests about which exhaust system is best when used in conjunction with TODA K20A parts, our engineers evaluated and tested all available DC5 exhaust systems on the market. After analyzing the results, our engineers decided to develop our own DC5 exhaust system. The main design criteria for this system was maximum power output.

The system utilizes stainless steel piping with a true 60mm inner diameter (60mm ID) for maximum flow, and performance. The gross weight of the muffler system is 12kg (26.4lbs), offering a substantial weight savings over the factory exhaust system.

Even their exhaust clip of the Supercharged Cooper S drive-by sounds damn impressive for a car w/ even less displacement than ours....they need to make a catback for us lol.

Im looking for exhaust that is not so high pitched (Ricer) it seems like the GMPP and the Magnaflow have the lowest tone. Does this sound right to everyone else or am I not hearing the clips right. Of these two the GMPP and the Magnaflow what do you think sound less like rice but still flow nicely enough to free us some hp
ps i plan on doing front to back, header, cat, and cat-back i dont know if this will change anything

I haven't heard a Cooper S exhaust the I didn't like come to think of it. Maybe we should bug some of those vendors for a catback.

Until recently, the Mini engine has been made by the same people that make the engine for the 350Z/G35... Renault, I believe. The motor in the Z car sounds like sex and its little wonder why the Mini motor sounds as good.

Professional Products makes it in colaboration with Anderson Motorsports. A lot of people are shying away from it not just because it wont net any significant gains on a bolt-on GT, but its also made in China

Edelbrock and a company called HPS also each have one in the works. I agree how frustrating it is to put all that work into the 2V and barely get 300rwhp N/A, but at the same time you can run mid to high 12's (on DR's or some really sticky street tires) with that same power and the right suspension mods, which is what I'll be shooting for this summer.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Borla exhaust? It's over $600 so I'm assuming it's decent. Anyone have this?

I'm going with the GMPP exhaust, unless someone makes something that's better. I hate that high pitched wail, and yes, i know it comes standard with 4cyl engines, but I like how the GMPP deadens that high end output down to a suitable level.

The Corsa Touring sounds almost stock from the clip I heard on here. The GMPP made by Borla sounds pretty deep without the tinny sound normally associated with 4 bangers.
