clutch

The car will go a certain speed at a certain rpm in each gear. If you are at that rpm and are going slower something is slipping, either your clutch plate between the flywheel and pressure plate or your tires and the surface beneath them. Everytime you start from a dead stop you are going to slip the clutch a little or your tires.

Exactly. Something needs to slip in order to allow the vehicle to accelerate from a stop. Cars can't just gain instant velocity, the clutch or tires need to slip before the car can get going. In an ideal situation with a manual trans, you want to keep the RPM's as low as possible for as short a time as possible while still accelerating smoothly
