Ya I was thinking the same thing. I can't say forsure how well it works. Like you though, In my welding classes, there would be 3 different guys welding the same material at three slightly differnet settings. There's so many variables in welding I honestly don't know how well it would work. Position, temperature, type of metal, etc, etc. Not to mention everyone has their own style.

Thats pretty much why im thinking its not very plausible or useful. It would be nice if such a thing exsisted but it would need a **** load of sensors and would probably be too bulky to work. It would have to determine user speed (which can change) gun angle, distance from work surface, forhand or backhand thickness of material, and a whole list of other variable i can't think of right now. Hell, what about contamination? is the welder going to determine of **** i gotta tell the user to go back to fill that crater that just exploded! Warning warning, sir please clean all surfaces prior to welding!

Also small enough to fit in the palm of your hand? the whole welder? gimme a friggin break...

This is also true you if you put 10 competent welders side by side all of their welds will have a slightly different look.

I didn't believe it either, but my dad brought home brochures and actually saw them in use. I guess they burned out a generator at the demo station for the plasma cutter. I wish I could find it on the net to show you.
